joker97: Resort was advertised as the only resort on the island. I presume if you were to spend a couple of thousands bucks to get there that you'd stay for more than a few hours.

They lied. Google can answer that one for you.

Wasn't sure if i should spoil parties but i have a question. When i was in raro the locals told me the fish in the snorkel areas is toxic. So i asked why. They said sewage was discharged into the snorkel reefs. Then i found my skin would come up in a major rash after every snorkel. I added two and two ... Got a bit confused ...

I do have very sensitive skin. No one else had that problem.

I wouldnt stay in a resort anyway, you can hire a house right on the lagoon in Aitutaki, all the mod cons, even bloody internet.

I presume you need to bring your own food and supplies? It's so isolated i doubt there is a grocer there?

No, there are plenty of good restaurants, and you can buy food in town. You are limited to 15kg on the flight over so you have to decide whats important. I took beer and left one of the kids behind.

I went to Raro last year, and didn't like it that much, humid, expensive and dirty (humid, cheap and dirty would have been fine!)

Mind you, I went with a small budget which didn't meant no restaurant meals, cocktails and tourist activities.

The photos look beautiful when I look back on it, I think if I went to Raro again I would take 3x as much money (You probably want 150+ a day spending $$$)

We did have fun cycling around the entire island and stopping off at all the beaches.

I've not been to any other of the pacific islands.

We stayed at one of the best places in Samoa a year or two ago. The range of foods available was pretty poor for vegetarians, and the quality was well below NZ. It didn't cause any problems, was all clean etc. Fiji was far better in quality and range of foods.

Depends a lot on what you want.

I love Raro - we have stayed at the Rarotongan 3 times. Pricey, but:

Breakfast included which is a decent buffet, free use of all gear (snorkelling, kayaking, swimming stuff).

Food is fine for resort style food or you can go for a trek around.

Raro is the most relaxed holiday I have been on.

Oh and raw sewage isnt discharged into the reef. There is nutrient runoff from the land but the flow in and out from the reef is huge and it wont be why you got a rash.

Another vote for Raro. Have been there several times, and never had a bad experience. Usually stay at the Edgewater, which is medium priced, and convenient, with reasonable restaurant. There are several very good restaurants such as Tamarind, transport is easy on the bus, and the Cook Islanders are friendly. Spend time on the beach, go snorkelling, go fishing, explore the interior of the island or, if all else fails, end up at Trader Jacks!

Being a foodie I am interested to hear more about the food in Raro? How would it rate compared to a reasonable restaurant in Auckland? I'll eat anything, but I want it fresh and well prepared.

You don't go to the pacific islands for the food. You go to relax and you eat some reasonably decent food. If you want top class food go to Sydney, New York etc. If you want sun, relaxation, and decent food go to an island.
