slliwgd: Interesting reading this thread, there are so many misinformed answers here coming from people who THINK they know but don't. NO I am not try to sell anyone our product, but just trying to help a person make an informed choice and it that happens to be a Sleepyhead from Farmers, then so be it.

Really.  You may work for a company who makes mattresses, how often do you actually go out and buy one from a shop, exactly.  I'm not too keen on the way you are dismissing everyone's experiences, and offering help only over PM.  If we are "misinformed" and don't know, why not enlighten us all?

Where in my post does it say I'm dismissing everyone's experiences. It doesn't. This has not to do with experiences but the product on offer at different stores. I was simply pointing out that Sealy does not sell the same mattress' to different retailers under a different name. The product differs from store to store. There are very few bed stores in NZ that have 100% the same product as a competitor. The ones that do, are selling Chines imports. There will be a slight difference between stores. I don't care if you're too keen on how or what I post. If you don't like it, move on.

I believe the dude who works for the bed company over those who do not, at least when talking about beds :)

I would suggest it tends to be rather common for large companies to tell their staff the same thing they tell their customers at lower levels.

In this case however I suspect its not a "same product" situation, But more of a "change as little as possible to create a minimally different product at the same price" situation.

I have found the retail price of beds ridiculous!

I went to Farmers when they had a 60% off and Big Save was still markedly cheaper.

I got the base I wanted and mattress for $1600 the base is a very solid wooden one and the mattress was the most comfortable one I sat/lay on.

It seems the mark up on these is very high.

I did actually find this when I was looking for my bed. In fact the beds were so different that no other retailer I went to had one that I liked. And as far as the Chinese imports.... You get what you pay for and not one was even remotely comfortable!

Do people really make (relatively) large/important purchases based on the discount they're receiving?

I mean, a bed, to me, has an impact on how I feel, on my health, on my productivity... sure, I want to get the best deal I can but more important to me is getting the best bed for me/us I can within our budget - whatever that is.

Buying primarily because one place provides a larger discount is crazy talk - unless you're talking about an identical product, Which in this case, you're not.

Indeed, my plan is to try and see which bed is the one we want, and then wait for a sale (because we don't need it in a rush). I think the primary decision maker should be suitable bed in terms of comfort, support etc. But it's harder to get other people's advice on that, because everyone has different needs. It's easier to get advice on pricing and discounts, so when a 'good deal' comes along, we'll have a better idea if it's really a good deal or not. That was thought process on posting this at least :)

I recently went to Wellington Beds Store in Porirua where they used some high technology to pressure map myself and my partner then compared different mattresses and their software and determined the best mattress for us. Took all the guess work and sharp salespeople out of the equation. And they gave us 55% off their standard mattress price. We expected it would take a couple of weeks for our new mattress to arrive but it only took three days. Awesome service and knowledgeable staff. We love our new natural rest mattress.
