no worries, i sort of guess, i started with 111 and times it by 3.141592 and then worked towards a number that match, so i got it in three goes. Someone out there will have the right method to doing it.

In that notation, wouldn't IJK = I*J*K?

And is that pi or pi*3.141592? (approx pi squared)

EDIT: Or are they substituting 3.141592 for pi?

Pi is an irrational number. Ie; cannot be expressed as a ratio. Therefore if the answer is Pi the equation is false.

I think they are just 3-digit numbers and the expression for pi is an approximation, the answer given seems to fit in with the rest of the puzzle.

I might have assumed that "IJK" (and LMN) implies that these integers are all different from each other - but obviously not. Otherwise 355 could be IJJ and 113 could be KKL?

But I have just read RunningMan's post and like that approach more.

Reading Wiki it would seem 355/113 (3.141592920) was a figure derived by a Chinese mathematician (Zu Chongzhi) in 480 AD and was for the next 800 years the most accurate calculation of pi.  I suspect those that are mathematicians probably know this number.

I don't know there is any ready and rough method to work the answer in the example out other than by trial and error.

Fabian, what made you choose 111 as a starting point.
