What happened to crumble deserts when they made the trip down here to NZ from the UK ?  The crumble part seems to have turned from sugar, flour and butter into just a pouring of porridge oats and seeds ?

Just grumbling because I ordered an apple crumble and got something that looks like I should pour on yoghurt and have it for breakfast! :-)

My mum (who has never lived in the UK) makes the "correct" kind. I have seen the porridge sort though, and while I don't hate it, it's also not my favourite. No idea where it came from!

most crumble I have seen (in NZ) resembles your first picture - so I'd say you just got unlucky.
I'm sure the oat based crumble is much more healthy though.

edit: actually, according to wikipedia, the addition of oats was something done in Britain during WWII due to the rationing of flour and butter.

I like both types. The correct one is more traditional here. The other is relatively new to me.

I have seen the correct one made with larger qtys of oats here and there over the years so I think it just evolved to near 9x% with additional ingredients to make it more healthy treat.

The 'new' type is faster to make and suited to cafe style.

That recipe also contains a full bunch of rhubarb and zero sugar. It'd be mouthpuckering to say the least. Think it's fair to say the author was going for healthiness over taste...

If I make it at home it's generally a quick dessert to use up excess apples. The oats recipe is basically zero prep.

I do prefer the original one though.

The supermarket ones are a mixed bag but usually more traditional.

Pears are very sweet + dates + and coconut also sweetens it. Serve with ice cream for the sweetener.

I think the oat version (which I dislike) is a 'new and trendy cafe-style' sort of nonsense.

Give me the sweet stodgy sort any day - preferably with as little fruit attached as possible!!

Don't get me started! I bought a "bacon and egg pie" at a cafe once and ended up with a pie full of pumpkin and green stuff. It had maybe two tiny squares of bacon and I'm not sure whether there was actually any egg in there at all...

Nope. I saw the same thing in the display case a week or so later so it wasn't a one-off, but rather some "cafe style" thing. I did not order it again :P

Perhaps cooking food in many different ways and adapting different ingredients is a good thing. If you don't like it then don't eat it, your crumble recipe is just, like, your opinion man.

I do like oats in my crumble, but not as a replacement for correct crumble.

As for bacon and egg pie, it needs to be more bacon and egg than anything else, I don't mind some potato and onion in it but not as the majority of the fitting.
