There is the argument that much harsher punishments for less serious crimes make people think "we'll, I'm screwed now, might as well go all in" and instead of driving 30 kph over the limit, they end up 80 kph over the limit, and crashing. Or someone who has assaulted someone figuring that if they get identified, they'll be put away for ever, and so they go on to kill their victim in the hope of getting away with it altogether.

As usual, the argument is far more nuanced than most people can be bothered thinking about.

You should be able to find sets like this in remainder sales overseas for token prices. I've even found relatively recent collections for surprisingly low prices from oddball locations, e.g. a large box of all B5 episodes and TV movies for something like $20 from the Isle of Man. And I checked the postage, it really was sent from the Isle of Man, it wasn't just some holding company there.

There's actually been quite a bit of research done on this, none of which I'm able to cite at the moment unfortunately, but the conclusion was that it makes little difference for most offenders. A quick Google to avoid the inevitable [citation needed] turned up this article from Sydney Uni as the first hit, and there's a lot of other stuff like that out there.

Don't know if I'd be that lucky and imagine its still too new. Or if I'm patient enough to wait. And quite often I spot something thats cheap and overseas but the postage is ridiculous, while the more expensive offer has much cheaper postage - coincidence...I think not !

Who or what is a Harris ?

I'd have thought looping Mull of Kintyre would be more than enough...

A couple of weeks I posted in the ‘smile’ thread about a korerū (wood pigeon) that had smashed into our ranch slider and ended up on our deck. It took 18 hours to recover before we saw it fly away.

Two days ago we were out on the deck and I heard the distinctive whoosh-whoosh of a korerū flying close, then an almighty thump as it hit the same glass about two meters from me. This one (it may be the same one) fell to the lawn one floor down, rather than ending up on the deck. It sat there looking very broken and barely moving for about 12 hours and again I was sure it was fatally injured - but eventually it was gone.

These big birds fly very fast and they’re heavy - so when they hit the glass at full speed it’s a huge impact. They must be strongly built to survive these collisions. These events are potentially catastrophic for the birds and are distressing for the humans - I hate seeing them sitting on the ground looking injured.

We have no idea why they seem to be confused or fooled by our ranch slider glass. It's probably a combination of light and sun angles and the reflections of surrounding trees. I thought they would be cleverer than that.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Why would a bird be clever about clear glass? It isn't part of their evolutionary history. Put decals or something on it to warn them or hang streamers, or if that is all too disruptive, maybe place a light to shine across it at an angle.

I've read one way to prevent this is to draw a grid of lines on the inside of the window with a highlighter - invisible to the human eye, but somehow birds' eyes can pick them out and let them know that there is a window there. Not sure if it is true or not, but it might be worth looking into.

This REALLY annoys me!

Almost every time something is on at the School this happens!

I used to paint Hydrants in a past life in a Volunteer Fire Brigade (We did it for the Council for our area)! After 4pm so CCC DON'T Care.

Fought for 5 years to get it repainted too. The CCC Guy said "It won't make any difference!"

He was right. They don't even paint the circles any more, even though Govt. Legislation states that they must be painted if they can "legally" be parked on!

CCC Choose not to paint them. Policing is by the relevant Local Authority, which is (You guessed it!) the CCC!
