The reporting of Tweets as if they were news.

Associated irritation: Prime Ministers etc issuing comment on matters of national and international significance via Tweet instead of press release.

Don't have an issue with Twitter, just another comms avenue. Times change.

@MikeB4 I think @Geektastic was referring to news organisations writing up a ten paragraph "news" item based on a 140 characters tweet that one of their junior "journalists" found during their "We have to fill space" hours.

As for the second one, I think it's just a new media but not everyone is on it so any official comms should still come out via other channels.

Agree. Official press statements should sill be done in association with other media.

Yes, that.

The other one is related in the instance where, say, someone of note dies and the newspapers report it as

"The Prime Minister tweeted that he was sorry to learn of the death."

rather than

"The Prime Minister made a statement to the Press that he was sorry to learn of the death."

The former makes it sound like something he dashed off whilst making a cup of tea, the latter carries the gravitas of his office.

113 pages of this thread, and Stuff and NZHerald still use Reddit and Twitter for their filler news. There's at least a month's worth of front-page articles in here!

Prima donnas at workplace.

The one who stole your chair, decided to have an annoyingly timed fire-drill, or designed the open-plan office?

You're stuffed from being outnumbered if it wasn't the same person, equally stuffed if you're outranked - the only rational option is to start laying personal grievance claims, demand stress leave, and spend the rest of the day at the pub - like any normal employee does these days, apparently.

When you have to brake suddenly in a roundabout, because some moron doesn't understand the road rules, and the steak and cheese pie, that was on the passenger seat beside you, flies out of it's paper bag and lands in the foot-well in a very non-pie shape, rendering it inedible. DEVASTATED!

It's still pie-flavoured, with extra carpet fluff seasoning !!! Yum!

Better on the floor well, than splattered down the insides of your legs ... not so much fluff seasoning, but bits of seared human flesh ...

freitasm: And a fire drill.

The remainder of your horoscope for today:
- coffee beans run out of the machine
- as you are leaving the bathroom previous person did not dry hands and left a wet door handle (ugh)

I've taken to using a paper towel to open the door. I'm not going to comment on how I shouldn't have to pull the door to get out in the first place. Oops, too late.

The number of people I see leaving the bathroom without washing their hands...

What in the world...

Apparently it's not possible to download IE 11 when using IE 9 (on Windows 7). When going through the "download centre", the download link doesn't appear. Clicking the "Internet Explorer" link in the footer of Microsoft's home page redirects to the generic support home page. I had to use Firefox to download IE!

"Dress anxiety" exacerbated by reading the dress standards thread.

I'm heading overseas soon - main purpose of this brief trip is for me to be speaking at a function. I'm extremely incompetent with the entire talking and presenting side of things. so I'd hoped that at least if I could look half-reasonable whilst making a complete fool of myself, I'd be able to maintain some dignity with people who weren't there to witness the shambles, but stumbled across still photographs on facebook etc. and would comment about how authoritative and respectable I seemed to be.  I desperately want to appear on those photos as if I knew what I was doing. I've been told that dress is "smart casual". This just doesn't add up, from previous experience with the particular culture where I'm heading, they have only two forms of attire - extremely smart and snappy, or very formal.

I was going to bundle everything from my wardrobe that might be able to be defined as "smart casual" - in NZ anyway - into a large bag, pray that it weighs less than 23kg, then once I'd arrived and met some of the mob of foreigners, I'd be able to form some concept of what was needed, thus getting by with minimal fuss and expense.  This is not to be, apparently.  From the very instant I hit the "confirm" button to buy the tickets, Her Indoors began compiling a list of every item of clothing I've ever owned, with a detailed explanation of why it's completely unsuitable. I'll be taking a completely empty bag with me, apparently, and be forced to spend the entire few hours between arrival and the commencement of proceedings being "outfitted" completely from head to toes in no doubt outrageously expensive new clothes, rushing from store to store in a jetlagged zombie state of mind, repeatedly screaming "I'll take it" to the purveyor of everything I try on.  God help me if the flight's delayed. My psychologist friend once explained to me the subliminal meaning of standing in a crowd and waking in horror once realising you're as stark naked as the day you were born, not that I've ever had one of those dreams, but I reject any deep explanation she'd offer as advice if I was to have one, as I'm truly doomed.
