Behodar:

On another forum, nine people have posted in a thread about an issue with some software "after an update". Not a single one of them has bothered to list which version they have updated to.

If people are complaining about problems after applying an update is it even necessary to explicitly state that it was Microsoft Windows?

Well, in this case it's Apple :)

There was a MacOS update and a Safari update, and the problem is with Safari "after the update"... but which update? For the record I updated both and am not having the issue, so it might be related to having one of the updates but not the other. Or it might be something else entirely. Given that it's Apple, it might get fixed in the next 3-5 years...

Ah, yeah, definitely not Microsoft then, in their case they'd be unable to reproduce the problem and have no idea how to fix it.

MikeB4: Interesting, English is boasted as being flexible and evolving except the reality is it’s plagued with inane language snobbery.

Kinda like when talking about soccer while watching my kids play, and some bore goes "You mean football."

NZSoccer changed to NZFootball to match the rest of the world in 2007.

That Wellington City Council have approved that 80% of Wellington will drop speed limits to 30 kph.
Someone please tell me who not to vote for in the Council elections.

This may have been more appropriate in the Whisky Tango Foxtrot thread.

That's so insane that I thought it was a typo or misreporting, but it appears they're serious. Time for mass civil disobedience, a la the UK poll tax?

In the same breathe Metlink informed us that not enough drivers and to always check first before embarking on a trip as many trips may be cancelled. So with such a reliable transport system and busses following cars at 30kph we are left with what. Feel very sorry for retailers in downtown.

Auckland already did that. My local council had a Greens councillor propose making all suburban streets 30km/hr which was defeated 24 to one.

Vector sending me a TXT at 7:15pm - a "friendly" reminder that there will be a power outage all day tomorrow.

How can it be a "reminder" when this is the first we've heard of it?

This will be the 3rd outage in the last couple of months and the 2nd where they "reminded" me in a "friendly" manner for the first time the night before.

If you're wondering about who voted for the 30km/hr thing, this page will have the meeting minutes including the voters when it's published: Planning and Environment Committee - 15 September 2022, 9.30AM - Meetings - Wellington City Council

Or you can watch the whole committee meeting on YouTube if you're feeling particularly masochistic.

Far, far from the rest of the world. It's only in places where association football is the predominant variation (and New Zealand) that it is called football.

The word football means so many things depending on where you are - in different parts of Australia it can mean AFL or league or union, and in NA American or Canadian football. In Ireland, Gaelic football or Association football. The list goes on.

Interestingly, NZ is an outlier with calling it 'football' - from Wiki:
Within the English-speaking world, association football is now usually called "football" in Great Britain and most of Ulster in the north of Ireland, whereas people usually call it "soccer" in regions and countries where other codes of football are prevalent, such as AustraliaCanadaSouth Africa, most of Ireland (excluding Ulster) and the United States. A notable exception is New Zealand, where in the first two decades of the 21st century, under the influence of international television, "football" has been gaining prevalence, despite the dominance of other codes of football, namely rugby union and rugby league.

I find it amusing that the same people saying "You mean football" will ask, 5 minutes later, "So you gonna watch the footy?" while referring to the Warriors.

On opening the above link I saw the words 'Traffic Resolutions Island Bay,' and immediately saw red. (For those not familiar with Island Bay it is a $4 million fiasco and counting that was forced upon the residents). Can’t bear to read it as will need a sledgehammer to get to sleep.

Am so mad at all of it that for the first time ever am seriously looking at the viability of retiring to Australia. One nod from the offspring who I won’t leave behind and it’s done. Sick of rising rates, insurance and especially fools with no common sense or life experience making unilateral decisions and totally disregarding the citizens they are meant to serve.

I believe one of those decision makers has never driven a car...therefore she is the obvious person to understand the problems of drivers. It’s like hiring a dentist to perform a lobotomy.

Different issues where I live but similar in many ways.

I do wonder it's not about understanding the problems of drivers but more about making driving less useful to 'encourage' people to use public transport. There's generally a reason why people drive and that's because public transport doesn't work for threm.

The way to encourage a move from one mode to another is to make it much more attractive/easy etc.  There are two ways to do this.

1.  Make the (authority) preferred way so much better, easier, cheaper etc that it's a no brainer to switch.

2.  Make the less preferred way hard to achieve and thus force people to switch against their will.

Unfortunately it seems the powers that be tend to go for option 2 and forget about improving the preferred service to a level that it needs to be at.
