The Bay of Plenty Regional Council who sent out the rates demand for the year , July to June 2023, in September for just under $600 and give you to Oct 20 to pay the full amount or pay a  10 % penalty and the only way to not pay full amount is to set up a direct debit. It seems to have caught most people by surprise as i phoned them and was told i was number 28 in the queue.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The way to encourage a move from one mode to another is to make it much more attractive/easy etc.  There are two ways to do this.

1.  Make the (authority) preferred way so much better, easier, cheaper etc that it's a no brainer to switch.

2.  Make the less preferred way hard to achieve and thus force people to switch against their will.

Unfortunately it seems the powers that be tend to go for option 2 and forget about improving the preferred service to a level that it needs to be at.

Its always simpler to beat people with a stick than dangle a carrot.

Public transport works for some people, but not the majority. Typically it works if you live in the suburbs and work in the CBD, it doesn't tend to work if you have to cross the CBD. I have a 40min drive to work and ~50mins home depending on traffic from West Auckland to South Auckland. If I were to take public transport it would take 2hr 10mins each way comprising of two trains, a bus and about 6km of walking at each end.

In the summer when I ride my bike 1-2 days per week I can do the journey in 1hr 25mins each way.

NZSoccer changed to NZFootball to match the rest of the world in 2007.

Far, far from the rest of the world. It's only in places where association football is the predominant variation (and New Zealand) that it is called football.

Actually, I'd say the use of Football or a variation of the word is by far the most prevalent:

Name by Nation Country What It Is Called Notes Afghanistan فوټبال translation of 'football' in Pashto, one of the two major languages in Afghanistan Albania futboll   Algeria كرة القدم (kurat alqadam) football in Arabic American Samoa soccer   Andorra futbol that's how you say football in Catalan, the sole official language of Andorra. Angola futebol football in Portuguese Anguilla football   Antigua and Barbuda football   Argentina fútbol the Spanish term for football Armenia ֆուտբոլ) translation of 'football' in Armenian Aruba voetbal   Australia Soccer and Football The national body is the Football Federation of Australia, but most of the population call it soccer, as there are other popular football codes, Australian Rules and Rugby. Austria Fußball   Azerbaijan futbol   The Bahamas football   Bahrain كرة القدم (kurat alqadam) football in Arabic Bangladesh football the sport in Bangladesh is run by the Bangladesh Football Federation Barbados football   Belarus футбол (futbol) translation of 'football' in Belarusian Belgium football   Belize football   Benin football   Bermuda     Bhutan     Bolivia fútbol the Spanish term for football Bosnia-Herzegovina nogomet the word is derived from "noga", meaning "leg" Botswana     Brazil futebol   British Virgin Islands     Brunei Darussalam     Bulgaria футбол Bulgarian for 'football' Burkina Faso football   Burundi football   Cambodia បាល់ទាត់ (balteat)   Cameroon football   Canada soccer In Canadian French, its called le soccer. Yeah - quite annoying. Not formatted as it looked when I first put it in there...

So - my latest annoyance is formatting and the lack thereof of my last post.

Edit - and now I think I just made it worse.

There have been a handful of issues. If you pay by direct debit then it's spread over 11 months, not 12, but that's not stated anywhere so the monthly amount looks higher than it should be. On top of that, even if you've already set up a DD you still get an invoice that has something like "amount due" on it, resulting in confusion about whether the DD was correctly set up or not.

There have also been people who assumed that the bill was for a quarter rather than a year, since that's how the district councils used to do it. The whole process hasn't gone as smoothly as some people would have liked.

Air Fryer. Never seen one. I do see air bakers which are just a tiny fan oven. I guess Air Fryer sounds like a new invention

Yeh, I was referring to the English speaking world as a whole, but there is a definite prevalence for the use of football over anything else.

At the end of the day however, language is about communicating ideas, and 'football' (and its variants) can lead to confusion as to which sport you're talking about, whereas 'soccer' doesn't.

This: 17 year old gets 6 months home detention for killing two because of his age

Long story short - he's a 17yo kid who drove recklessly and killed two people with no remorse and plenty of previous charges in Youth Court, but because of his age, he gets off with a light sentence that won't affect him or change his behaviour at all.

Eva888: That Wellington City Council have approved that 80% of Wellington will drop speed limits to 30 kph.
Someone please tell me who not to vote for in the Council elections.
That's so insane that I thought it was a typo or misreporting, but it appears they're serious. Time for mass civil disobedience, a la the UK poll tax?

It's pretty much unenforceable anyway. But I suggest that on many (most even?) suburban streets driving at 50kph would be dangerous, even to the extent of being insane. And difficult, in that there may be many intersections close together.

Hopefully the corollary of the 30kph limit on 80% of streets is that on the (say) 5% of wider arterial streets the speed limit is raised to (say) 70kph, which in many cases is what people are mostly driving them at anyway.

This will be a goldmine for sign manufacturers & installers, because every intersection between an arterial and a 50kph street and a 30kph street would need a pair of signs, plus perhaps paint on the road itself.

Am so mad at all of it that for the first time ever am seriously looking at the viability of retiring to Australia. One nod from the offspring who I won’t leave behind and it’s done. Sick of rising rates, insurance and especially fools with no common sense or life experience making unilateral decisions and totally disregarding the citizens they are meant to serve.

You think Australia doesn't have the same problems? They elected ScoMo, after all. And Pauline Hansen. And Joh Bjelke-Petersen. Google "property tax increases australia"

My state recently changed their land tax calculation to include land anywhere in Australia, even if that land has already had tax paid on it! They're not taxing the land, of course, just changing the rate of tax on the land in the state, so it's totally legit.

$18.5 Million will be spent on 'Road Calming' (that’s plants and stuff to hide the 'aggressive asphalt.').
$1.1 mil on signage
$7.7 mil on implementation...to make the city more vibrant.
$35 mil already spent on consultants since 2017
My Rates went up by $1000 to over $6500 and I still have to buy my own rubbish bags.

In yesterdays NewstalkZB interview about the decision with Councillor Iona Pannett was asked by Heather Duplessis-Allen 'but what if there are an overwhelming number of people who do not want this,' Iona Pannett replied 'That’s not how we make decisions.'

Councils already subsidise public transport, because it would be horrendously expensive to provide roads big enough for everyone to drive to work.

The problem with public transport is that you need a high population density (which we don't have) to make it effective. If you could move all the Wellingtonians from Johnsonville, Tawa, Kelburn, Karori, etc into blocks of flats in (say) Karori, you could then have  a convenient (fast, frequent) and cheap public transport service between Karori and the CBD. In many European cities, public transport is so good that many people rarely use their cars, and many don't even own cars. Because public transport in NZ is poor, Kiwis (generally speaking) need a car, and need to drive it. Because many Kiwis commute by car, public transport is poor.
