Eva888: Nowadays I wouldn’t allow a little girl or any child of mine to walk far alone, with friends or siblings, maybe.

My grandchild went to the swings a few doors down from us at Xmas, I figured it was safe to let her but her Aunt followed soon after only to see a drugged up creepy looking guy in the playground where she was alone. So much for leaving kids to fend for themselves.

And this is a great example of anecdote vs. evidence:

Violent crime rates have been dropping consistently for the last 20-30 years (US figures but other countries are fairly similar).

Most child offenders are known to the victim (figures run up to 95% or so depending on how you assess it), not random bogeymen hiding behind bushes in parks.

So the thing you're worried about (anecdote) is more or less the opposite of what you should be worrying about (evidence).

Eva888:

Can’t see why schools don’t open the gates for cars to come into the playground at home time to pick kids up.

Because the do not want to mix large numbers of kids with inconsiderate parents in cars who are too busy looking for their child and not everyone else's...they are in a hurry.

And then there's the Remuera tractor problem again, if you went out to design a vehicle to kill and injure children (huge weight, difficulty in stopping quickly, bull bars and similar, no visibility down in front of you) you couldn't do much better than an SUV.

Did you try to smuggle the onboard meal home, again?

You walked down a street in NY before boarding?

(For people who don't get that, google "sidewalk pizza").

It was basically all packaged food, and I think Manhatten may have a chocolate shortage as a result of our last minute shopping.

Nope. Just 4 planes all landed at once. They ran 4 lanes and went around the corner. The wait to get to processing was the issue. Once we got there it was only 5 minutes from there to out.

I was just joking about being in NY but it looks like you were really there... of all the travel I've done the NY streets were probably the worst biohazard I've enountered.

Inner City Paris, and London and Hong Kong were all worse in my opinion

Confirmation bias... there's nothing there that says the "drugged up creepy looking guy" was actually any threat to your granddaughter.

In fact, drug abusers don't target little girls any more than any other part of society, and a lot less than some. It's hard to know what "creepy looking" means in this context, but again a "look you in the eye", "suit and tie", "clean and well-groomed", "middle-class", "authority figure" man is no guarantee against child abuse.

Good point, Paris is about the level of NY. London I haven't found that bad, and in Hong Kong it's mainly due to the storing and selling of things that smell like they should have been thrown out at least two weeks earlier, it's exotic (it not terribly pleasant) smells rather than rotting garbage and urine.

I'm told that Paris in the springtime is disgusting, moreso than usual. Apparently, when the snow melts, several months worth of poodle turds defrost. Not sure why it would be any different than London or Berlin or Helsinki... maybe in those cities people don't take their animals out for walkies.

That particular issue is common across many European cities, once the snow (if there is any) starts to melt... ugh. In Paris it's more the human waste that's obvious, whereas NY has a sort of permanent baked-in rotten organic matter miasma... and giant rats...

Anyway, how about them flower gardens with nicely scented roses and birds chirping in the trees?

Lets just look at the issues the Catholic Church has had with sexual abuse to see how "nice, trusted" people in position of power "Say anything and you will go to hell" are the real risk, not strangers.
