Load of garbage

Fossel fueled power plants, coal fired power plants, trucks, planes, rockets etc etc etc

Cars and other passenger vehicles were responsible for 27 percent of New Zealand's gross carbon dioxide emissions in 2018

Cars and vans account for around 10 percent of global CO₂ emissions

Ours is likely higher % wise as we have such a green power grid

I find it heartwarming that there are people here willing to devote time and attention to scrutinising my posts for perceived errors. It is reassuring to know that my opinions carry such weight.

I am also glad to know New Zealand is a shining example for the rest of the world when it comes to motorcar pollution. That would have been useful when I lived in Los Angeles in the 1960s, and I couldn’t see the other side of the street from the smog, and my eyes wouldn’t stop streaming.

Whether 100% or 10%, cars pollute. It is one of the prices people seem willing to pay for them. They don’t just pollute directly either. Everything that goes into the manufacture of them contributes, as does all the infrastructure and associated technology they require. There are better alternatives in most cases.

You say that like bikes dont also pollute when being manufactured....

I bet the horse riders and carriage drivers said the same nonsense about those dang new fangled horseless carriages getting new stuff.

Planners and Green advocates could maybe picture Grandad and Grandma riding back up the hill on their bicycle loaded with groceries, or cycling to the local doctor when sick. Of course they could have gone by bus, once they managed to hobble slowly down the hill with their rheumatism to catch one and possibly infect everyone on the bus. It would only take them six times as long to get anywhere but hey they’re retired and what else do they have to do. What? It’s raining and a howling gale you say. Pop on a raincoat Dear and take some wipes for your fogged up glasses, or you could wear contacts they say but old dry eyes aren’t as conducive to them.

Or oops, they get knocked off their bike after a zippy cyclist in Lycra whizzes by and clips Nana on the cycle lane. Ok they do go slower than most because their wasted muscles and degenerated knees can’t pedal as fast and that makes them weave a bit but, I’m sure the zippy cyclists will be impressed and understanding that all the old dears are saving the planet instead of using their cars.

ACC will be equally impressed by all the elderly breaking brittle bones and hips from bike and scooter accidents and will admonish the elderly to be more careful because it’s a well known fact that old people have balance issues and that’s why ACC  support Steady As You Go classes for the elderly.

Councils are forcing everyone to get out of their cars by cutting out parking and reducing lanes with a lot of Green speak and very little real world practicality, common sense and inclusiveness. Easier to ignore the reality that old people riding bikes or walking for miles isn’t remotely possible for the majority of them.

Maybe a thread should be created to cover and support cycle phobia.

That's a silly argument. No one is saying cycling is the answer for every journey. If you look at the opposite of your argument, which presumably is that the car is the answer for every journey, what do we end up with?

Jammed cities , and that's not great is it?

If we can get more people to cycle more journeys , that takes pressure off the roads and parking for drivers.

You should be thanking every cyclist you see because that is one less driver circling the block nabbing the parking place before you get there.

Maybe grandad and grandma could catch a ride with one of the elderly services set up for this purpose, or they could avail themselves of other dedicated facilities like shopper help. Or of course they can choose to sit in gridlocked traffic for three hours while desperately trying not to think of toilet breaks. Why do these kinds of discussions always seem to devolve into extremist black or white arguments?

Russell Coutts acting like an angry old man shouting at kids to get off the grass. He seems oblivious of the fact that ignoring the environment and other inhabitants of our only home is what has got us deep in the doggy do.

Another squash related injury that will probably have me out 6 weeks, right before the season starts after a 2.5 month break!

Gutting, not even taking into account the pain!

Phobia LOL, but the discussion should be moved so as not to derail the thread, we want to be able to rant in short bursts :)

I will inflame this enough to get people to create a new topic in the Transport sub-forum: Why is the right at war with cyclists? We’re not ‘wokerati’ – we’re just trying to get around | Zoe Williams | The Guardian

Companies that make no attempt to retain customers. I contacted a company and said something like "I've been a customer for x years, the price has crept up a bit since I joined, and your competitors are $x cheaper. What kind of deal can you offer me?"

They came back with a "deal" of inferior service for the same price as listed on the website.

Certainly not ideal and can be soul destroying. I finally gave up rugby after a series of injuries when I was young. I recall getting injured every time I played squash, could never see that black hypersonic projectile.

Just change companies. I do not understand loyalty to businesses. Its almost as absurd as all those PlayStation and Xbox fanboys.

The challenge for me, is it's really the only sport I enjoy playing, and without excercise, like most people, I suffer mentally. This particular injury means I can't even swim. It will pass, but it seems like I am never 100% pain free, or injury free these days.
