Black Friday sales! I'm over it. I was looking at PBTech. I think they think we are stupid. Seems they just slap a black friday logo on pretty much everything. For example search raspberry pi, and some of the discounts are a slap in the face insulting. i.e. less than a buck off!

I don't get it. It seems to me to be economic idiocy. Why would you discount a product you're more than likely going to sell at the normal price anyway?

Sales used to be to get rid of stock that's been hanging around for a long time and or has been superseded, not to sell current stock. Why would you want to cut your much needed profit and by doing so cut your own throat with this stupidity? The trouble is once one idiot starts you're kind of forced to follow suit.

Yes I know someone will say the extra turnover will make up for the discount. Does it really? I doubt it. Especially when eveyone is at it by running sales. You're just going to sell the same amount of stuff at a lower price.

Also you need to think about how much extra you need to sell to make up for a discount. For example let's say you have a 50% mark up. A product you buy for $66.67 is sold for $100. Gross profit is $33.33 Lets say your costs of sales is $15. Total costs to you of $81.67. That leaves you $18.33 nett profit.

If you have a sale with 15% off, the sale price is now $85 leaving you with $3.33 nett profit. That's a reduction on nett profit of about 80%. That's a huge amount of extra sales you need to make.

Depends on the P&Ls of the retailer and the manufacturer, and it differs depending on the industry too. Sales may be funded by the retailer, or they may be funded by the manufacturer. What if you sell ten times as many units when on sale?

Yep understood on who might fund the price drop and you make a good point. I was giving a general example.

I very much doubt a 10% or 15% price decrease would give anywhere near ten times the number of sales. In my example you needed 6 times the number of sales just to break even. If you got two to three time increase I'd say you'd be doing very well.

Competition. Brand marketing. Minimum order quantities. All sorts of reasons.

Received a Shortcode SMS from 2270 Supposedly from Samsung NZ regarding a delivery yesterday.

Today a Shortcode SMS from 4445 saying it's Out for Delivery!

The waybill number tracks in Fliway's site saying Out for Delivery today!

Phoned Samsung.....not aware of any scam.

I await the non-ordered delivery!

Got the answer from Fliway.

It is indeed a Samsung NZ delivery for someone in Auckland!

The mobile number given is obviously wrong, and they have no idea why different shortcodes were used.

The CSR assured me they will follow up with Samsung re the wrong number etc.

That's a disappointing end to a potential tale of a gift that you did not know you were receiving.

I don't know if this can be counted as small but the increasing number of traffic cones that litter the Wellington streets makes driving here now like manoeuvring around an obstacle course.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

But to really do it properly you need to add a Yankee screwdriver to the mix, then hold the screw in one hand and ...

(Apologies to anyone who clenched just reading that).

Well what do you expect if you've got tens of thousands of traffic cones packed in next to each other, this time of the year the nights are warm, there's not much else for them do to, it's not surprising you're seeing lots of extra traffic cones appearing.

I know, I know, square drive (Robertson) screws are so much easier to use.

The one thing about slotted screws is that when used in timber with visible grain, they look nice when you align the slot with the grain.

My old woodwork teacher Mr Coop taught me that when I was about 11 or 12. God bless that wee man.

I can appreciate that.

Now I only have 99 reasons I hate slotted screws. 💯
