Yup. People who used a Raspberry Pi in the early days often ended up cursing USB and wondering why they didn't use a barrel connector.

5 gig nics are really cheap.

5 gig switches are.... rare and expensive.

Searching for 5G ethernet isnt exactly a usefull search since everything 2.5G comes up, or 5GHz wireless stuff etc.

Should have saved $15 per PC and just got 2.5G ones if I cant get switches for a reasonable price.

That's why I've been using 10Gb/s for a long time. Long established as an IT standard and used cards can be purchased very cheaply. However, mostly optical, which has significantly lower power requirements.

Which is all well and good at the moment, but what happens when a better connector comes along? I remember when European phone companies struggled to roll out 3G because the EU had dictated that the spectrum must be used for 2G GSM.

What do you propose as an alternative? Technology progresses.

Given the scope of USB-C and it's ability to pass data and power, I don't see it being usurped any time soon.

Cards are all larger than a 1x slot which would limit what machines I can put them into, whereas the 2.5 and 5 cards are good to go in the otherwise useless slot.

So how do you expect the laptop to know the capabilities of the adapter connected to it without that pin being there? If it tries to pull 130w from a 65w adapter and then either overheats it or has it constantly shut down and come back again, that is a pretty terrible user experience. There has to be an advertisement of the capabilities and the serial rom over a single pin is a well proven way to do so.

I don't claim to have a better proposal, I'm just giving my opinion that dictating technology choices in law could be a bad idea. As you say, technology progresses, but the law tends to progress much more slowly.

Advertise all you like but don't make the thing completley unusable because it doesn't like something. We got by fine for many years with regular power suppies, even transformers for christsake. How many houses have been burnt down over that time?

From the reading I have been doing, the intention of this is to secure profits by locking consumers into one brand more than it is intended to keep them safe. I am glad Europe is leading the way out of this nonsense and I can't wait for it to arrive here.

When ask a very specific question and get a generic and vague answer that doesn’t come close to addressing the specific question I asked:

Question: How many EFL Championship games will I be able to watch with my subscription? Are all games available or just a selection?

a) don't know how many games I'll be able to see and

I understand the fact that they don’t know WHICH matches they’ll be able to show, but they will 100%!know how many Chanpionship matches they’ll have the rights to vs the rest of the EFL.
