The seemingly automatic and unexplained use of the informal "Du" (you) with other people is not only impolite, it also demonstrates a lack of sensitivity. They want to appear particularly empathetic by using "Du" to express, "Hey, we're friends! Everything's easy between us!" And that's precisely what isn't empathetic.

It's actually a form of degradation and disrespect. While addressing someone informally signifies closeness, friendship, sympathy, and equality, this doesn't mean that using "Sie" (the formal "you") automatically negates all these positive qualities or creates a sense of superiority or cold distance. It's entirely possible to be closer to someone with a respectful "Sie" than with "Du."

There are a few facts about using "Sie" and "Du" that can help you appear confident and poised in all situations. Generally speaking, it's considered proper etiquette to use "Sie" with adults AND young people once they enter the workforce. This applies to both private AND professional situations, in face-to-face conversations as well as in phone calls, letters, and emails.

And it continues until a mutual offer of the informal "Du" (you) has been made and accepted. πŸ™‚

That today's youth no longer address me with the polite "Sie" (formal "you"), but simply use the informal "Du" (informal "you"). As if I'd ever herded pigs with them. 😁

Yeah, I’m old enough that having a child call me by my first name makes me uncomfortable- it just wasn’t done was I was young, you know? So it startles me when some child I just met calls me by my first name and I don’t like it. Even my aunts and uncles were addressed as “Uncle X” and “Aunt Y”. First names seem to be the way young people (oh boy now I feel old) do it now and it’s how parents etc introduce you too. I’ll get over it though.

You're making me think now!

When I was a kid, some of the adults I knew were Mr X or Mrs X, whereas others were known by their first name. In one case I knew someone who worked at the high school. When I was younger I called her by her first name, then when I was at school I called her Mrs X since everyone else did.

I'm definitely Uncle Y to my niece. The only other kids I regularly interact with call me by my nickname, which is perfectly fine. That's the only name their dad knew me by when we were introduced.

We have a saying: „What little Hans doesn't learn, big Hans will never learn!“ πŸ™‚

BTW: Incidentally, I'm not particularly looking at private contacts, but rather in business contacts, primarily those of young German-speaking employees of American companies who simply extend their internal, seemingly American corporate culture to their German clients.

Some even excuse the lack of manners with COVID-19. But apparently the customer exists for the company, not the other way around. Well, there are certainly opportunities being missed there. 😁

I'm annoyed that I have to have a tooth removed, because it's cracked.

As I am so needle-phobic, I have to be referred to a specialist surgeon that can do the extraction under a general anaesthetic, which means I have to make do over the next few days (long weekend of eating on one side of the mouth and a cocktail of painkillers).

I’ve deferred my appointment due to slight improvement. Have figured out that warmth on the painful side helps, don’t let it get cold, as in riding a bike with cold wind blowing on face etc.

Just got another unknown call from 06-920-3951. It's a New Plymouth number, and I don't know anyone personally from New Plymouth.

Toothache during holiday weekends that I hoped had eased, accompanied by sore throat. 3am thinking about Handsomedan again. Seems there’s a devious plan in the universe to get sick or develop pain precisely after 5pm on a Friday night. That’s two weekends stuffed last one was in the deluge.

Well, I can categorically state that when they say Tramadol lasts for around 4 hours, they mean it lasts for approximately 3hrs 50 mins.

I'm getting used to sleeping for short bursts and then waking up for more painkillers.

Surgery tomorrow. Not sure how I feel about it.

Tramadol is no good for me. It freaked me out and didn't seem to alleviate the pain from a slipped disc in my lower back. I went back to just Panadol and put up with the pain.

We recently got a particularly „clever“ parcel delivery driver who assigned the package to the recipient's first name instead of last name at the collection point, and naturally, his colleagues couldn't find the package after three collection attempts, and it was returned after a week. It's happening more and more often!

What will happen if wage dumping doesn't even stop for illiterate people? That much isn't written on the address label! 😑
