There's a new Star Wars movie. Amazon doesn't have a Blu-ray. Mighty Ape doesn't have it. JB Hi-Fi doesn't have it. Noel Leeming doesn't have it. Why do I have to watch an inferior "shared" copy (potentially with people using their phones, kids making a racket, no Pause button) in this day and age?

@matisyahu:

People who play music out the speaker on their mobile phone in public - doubly so if it is bad music.

While on the bus.

Or use the speakerphone part, and speaking loudly because they cannot hear the other person, even on the loudest volume setting. Meanwhile, everyone for metres around can clearly hear both sides of the damned conversation.

What is it with people that they cannot keep their conversations private ? Are they so filled with their own self importance ? Or just stupid ...

Hmm, I have a frequency generator app on my phone - I might end up using it more often, other than for checking my "supposed" hearing loss ...

My thoughts are no longer my own and is probably representative of our media-controlled government

I blame reality TV... as in where some Kardashian idiot puts phone on speaker and holds it in front of her chin while waffling. Because, like, the whole world is fascinated to hear your utterly inane drivel.

I recently experienced this in hospital (Auckland Central) until 2:30am  in a surgical ward.  I couldn't move because of opiate dose and various tubes and the nurses just ignored the behaviour.  The next day I had my partner give the guy my cheapy headphones just to get some peace and quiet.

I thought up lots of replies that seemed witty to me but decided better to just say "Hope you are feeling better", @MikeAqua !

True, but I'd have exactly the same argument tomorrow (once it has been released).

Quip away I'm not sensitive.

I'm all good.  I was the donor so there was nothing wrong with me until I had surgery.  A month later I barely feel like I had an operation.  Modern surgery is pretty impressive.   Recipient is doing well too.

I do feel there should be a premium-economy section in hospitals for organ donors though!

That's how the market work.

Cinemas, then home and streaming (sale first then rental). I'm happy with paying $15 to watch it next week at The Embassy em Wellington. Nice, large screen, good sound.

On other movie releases I just wait until it appears on Amazon Instant Video - and even so, wait until it's for rent. For example, tonight I am going to watch Kingsman The Golden Circle. It just wen from Sale only to Sale or Rental overnight. Happy to wait and pay US$4.99 to watch this movie at home.

No need to pirate anything.

I am not sure of the specifics, but if you donated an organ, you sir, are a legend and my Geekzoner of 2017!

Now I know who to call when I need something :)

Unfortunately, due to a fight with the big C a few years back that I thankfully came out of largely unscathed, I am now not allowed to donate blood let alone anything else. A crying shame given I am a universal donor blood type

Right, but my argument is around why the market needs to work like that. Several years ago they did some experimentation around releasing movies for rental at the same time as in theatres - I remember paying US$25 for Life of Pi while it was still running. It seems that the figures didn't add up as they're talking about doing it again, but for $50 this time. If I'm paying that much then I want to be able to keep it...

US$50 for a movie that is in the cinemas is too much. Again, that's the way the market works. To make it change everyone should do their part by not going to the cinema, thus forcing the distributors and producers to think about doing simultaneous releases.

I do my part - I pretty much don't go to cinemas anymore unless for a special occasion. I always wait until I can rent a movie, even if it means a lot of people saw it before me. I don't care, I'm paying less than others.

Blockbusters I generally watch at the cinemas, other stuff I might wait. Depends how much I want to see it. To me it would be a crime to see the new Star Wars movie on anything other than a massive screen with dolby surround sound, but I accept not everyone feels this way.
