jamesrt: I think you got that backwards - it's "$1.999"* in Auckland DESPITE the "regional tax"; vs $2.409 here in Welly.

 

I'd better not tell you that I paid $1.88 in Whakatane a few days ago (admittedly with a Smartfuel card, but does anyone ever pay headline rates these days?)

NZ Companies that do online shopping badly!

 

Do an Online order, pay via Paypal. (That is all they offer!)

 

2 Days later - order still ON HOLD.

 

Use contact details shown on Website. (A mobile)

 

Person who answers phone - has sold the business and will follow it up, promising reply.

 

Another day = goes by...nothing has changed, or reply.

 

Call again. Same result.

 

Now finally the "new" person has emailed to say:

 

They have received my order, but:

 

They do not accept Paypal....but I have already paid!

 

Extra Courier fees may apply.

 

Supply my address - but it's on the order!

 

 

 

Awaiting my reply re payment etc!

 

Sheesh......never had this trouble from overseas. But several NZ Companies have screwed up!

I would strongly recommend you just create a payment dispute with Paypal. Explain what has happened and they should refund your money.

Orcon's software. Orcon's support. 

 

Got a text from Orcon yesterday... my home broadband was about to be suspended. I didn't actually see the text until 4:20pm.

 

So I click the link and find that my account balance is $0.00. I already have an automatic payment set up from my Visa. In any case, I can't pay any money because none is owing. A "please explain" email gets no response. Get home and find that the broadband is down. yell

 

The 0800 number in the text turns out to be 9-5 only. Can you guess what time it is when I get home? Go to their website (on my phone). Their collections phone number is also manned 9am or some such to 5pm. They have a "live chat" thing... great! Except it's only manned 9am to 5pm. I can send an email which will be answered really quickly, like within a day or so.

 

Today my account shows a balance of $79 owing. I pay it, despite already having an automatic payment.

 

Looking for another provider when my current contract runs out.

Some accounting systems calculate to 1/100 of a cent. This is done so that things like GST calculations will still be correct after applying rounding.

Problem though, is that fully paid up accounts might still have $0.0021 or so oweing. Which is displayed to the user as $0.00 But that very small amount can still trigger rules for things like disconnect service when payment is overdue.

There was a thread on the 2degrees forum about someone who had their account balance change, after adding $0.00 Same thing.

Seems like Orcon need a rule saying don't disconnect if overdue amount is less than say $5

Steam.

 

On a Unix system (in this case, Mac OS), "~" means your home directory.

 

I asked Steam to download a game to ~/Desktop. "Game downloaded successfully", it tells me. Yet there's nothing on the desktop.

 

It turns out that it had created a new directory called "~" in a completely unrelated place and had dumped the files in there. It took me a while to find them!

We’re currently in Oz and 91 unleaded is A$1.47 at the gas station just up the road - that’s about $1.60 in real money.

@frankv I have found Skinny great to deal with. We were upgraded to 200/20 Fibre when we changed over from VDSL for no extra cost even though my contract was for 100/20.

 

We will be renting our current house with internet and going with Skinny again at the new house.

Accounting systems that don't calculate GST line by line, but on the total causing rounding issues later on!
