Geektastic:
You Tube.
Filled with "Dave The Tech Squirrel", "Ted The Phone Ninja", "Jane The Tech Chick" etc etc ad infinitum ad nauseam.
Each and every one attending the same product launches and getting the same free stuff and the same free phone/computer/tablet/ear buds/drone/camera etc etc to 'review'.
Each and every one beginning their review with "What is up You Tube" and referring to the item being reviewed as "this guy"
Getting sick of it...
Yeah, you may hate it, but think of the exposure the maker is getting...
Maker sends 100 "insert product here" to 100 YouTube reviewers who each get say 500,000 - 1,000,000 views per video.
It's a win win for both the maker and reviewer, the maker gets there product seen, and the reviewer gets paid from YouTube

Can anyone explain this story to me? It is so garbled I actually cannot understand what it is saying. Are electric trains being replaced or not? If not, are they being refurbished? Is there money for that? If not, is the rail service being shut down? And so on. This is the worst-written article I have seen in awhile, and that is saying something. Worst of all, it is on the supposedly 'quality' RNZ site. RNZ has deteriorated in a very noticeable fashion since it came under the purview of Labour. It is like RNZ has been abandoned and forgotten about since the scandals at the Ministry.

Seems Ok to understand:
Kiwirail wanted to ditch electric loco, claiming it would make freight more efficient using the diesel loco's by taking trucks off the road
Pro train Govt said no you won't ditch electric locos
Kiwirail said we don't have an money to refurbish electric locos
Govt to give 35 Million to Kiwirail to refurbish electric locos
Well, that's how I've read it.

Right. But how do we get the content without having to put up with the inanities? And who *is* the target market for a video which consists mostly of someone unwrapping something?

"Unboxing" seems to be quite a big thing.

Bizarre, isn't it?

Vicarious Christmas?
A quick google says it's all about the money. When you're making videos and getting a lot of views per video, then YouTube pays you.
As for unboxing, maybe it is just human nature, people want to know what's in the box

It is, oh the smell, oh the feel, oh the touch of that first opening. It is truly spiritual.
However I just rip it open and get on with it.

I'm still glad that unboxing videos exist: I needed one when selling a phone because I couldn't figure out how to fit everything back into the box!

Except apparently the government isn't going to give the money after all or even if it did/does there still isn't enough (I think a billion $ is mentioned somewhere) so Kiwirail can't do the refurbishment so does that mean the trains will stop running and if not, then is the refurbishment actually necessary? After reading the piece several times I still don't know.

Thanks. I still think the article is incoherent.
