Americanisms annoy me :)

I'm still trying to figure out why Americans call petrol gas when it's obviously a liquid

(yes, I know gases can exist in other states, no need for pedants to point this out, this is a fun thread)

I feel the same about why we call the boot of a car the boot, there is seldom boots in there or shoes, there is 45,673 empty shopping bags though. The US trunk is probably more accurate as cars of old had large boxes or trunks on the back to carry lunch, goods, bodies, dogs etc etc .

Timely to pull out this old chestnut.  (Some of it is a bit out of date, sorry.)

Taxes. I'm in Houston for two days and the taxes on my hotel bill amount to the equivalent of NZ$76 per DAY!

Gotta pay for the state somehow. No income tax does not equal no tax.

No, $100 for the room and $1900 for ‘extras’. 😁

Because GST is (almost) always included in the upfront price here, it becomes a pain in the US when state and federal taxes are added after.

What's the difference? Most countries use an inclusive tax - GST, VAT. The tax is already in the consumer's price. It's just different there and you know how much you are paying. We have this here anyway.

I rather like our GST, at least you pay what you see, no need for crazy calculations at the checkout.
