This nonsense from Stuff.

New Zealand was uniting to fight Covid-19, we were told. In reality, there were two versions of lockdown: while the working class kept the country safe and tidy, white-collar Kiwis eased into their home offices.

The actual article has some interesting stuff in it, but the clearly click-bait headline makes me feel quite aggrieved.

I am a white collar worker, but I have hardly "eased into my home office"...I've worked long hours in a stressful job, with stressed out staff to deal with and stressed out customers to please.

Grossly unfair to assume all office workers have the easy life. And it perpetrates the myth amongst those blue collar workers with a chip on their shoulders (I know a few).

Article for reference

People without self-awareness - they put their laptops on a low table, and get very close to it during conference video calls - you end up seeing only their mouths when they talk.

Something small, really small, but it annoys me out of principle.

Went to the AA centre this morning to renew my driver's licence.  They have implemented some sort of electronic queing system that TXTs you when it's your turn.  (Not really necessary at the branch I was at but I can see how it will help for street facing stores).

What annoyed me was that you have to TXT a premium number to enrol in the queue, and I got charged 20 cents for that. ( They do have contingency for those who don't have cell-phones...could also apply to those with no credit in their accounts I guess.)

That really annoys me. I saw on the news that some restaurants are doing the same. What the hell are you supposed to do if you don't have a phone? I find it supremely arrogant to just blithely assume everyone does. I am happy to skip the BS restaurants that indulge in this crap, but AA is another matter.

I see you say they have a 'contingency' for those without phones. What might that be? An actual human being waits on you at the counter?

Christ, get a bit of perspective. I too have a stressful white collar job etc etc but on any reasonable view, white collar workers had it relatively easier insofar as they didn't have to put themselves, their bodies, and potentially their health on the line as those blue collar essential workers did. Which is precisely the article's point. It's not all about your feelings.

Should add that it's their contact tracing as well.  Contingency is that there's someone at the door who manually enters your details on a tablet.

OK, this sounds reasonable and makes sense, especially if it includes contact tracing. Then I have no objection.

My SO who's commandeered my office, has a small notebook / tablet - with the potential problem as above, but the screen is also too small to use when it's set up at the right distance for zoom meetings etc.  I don't have a webcam  (there may be a 20 year old one in a box in the basement).  She hated the angled selfie view with the notebook set up on the desk as she thought she looked terrible, there's a stand that could be used, but it's too high so would be right in the way of the main monitor needed to look at spreadsheets etc etc when in the zoom meetings. There's a spare macbook pro here which could have done the trick - but she needs windows software - I could have given her the new-ish windows laptop I'm using now, but found out after lockdown that the webcam doesn't work and probably never has. (It "works" in terms of being installed with correct drivers etc and enabled in BIOS, but the image is completely black).

So, I've used duck tape to stick the tablet on top of the main monitor, more tape and paperclips to hold it at an appropriate angle to a shelf above. It looks terrific - and it falls down sometimes. It's also "my fault" because I went with her to clean out her office, there was a large monitor with camera on her desk that we could (err - "should") have taken, but I stupidly said she didn't need it.

Get a bathroom mirror and use it to change the camera's angle of view?

Was a driver's licence, not a car licence.  Has to be done over the counter (eye-check, new photo and all that).
