Handsomedan:

Our house is adjacent to council-owned reserve land which has regenerating bush on it. We reported some very large noxious plants to the council. They said they'll get their contractors to come out and cut them down (they were large trees of the noxious kind).

Long story short: contractor arrived, said "Sorry mate, we only do the other side of the street - you'll need to contact council and get the other contractors out". 3 months (and many emails/phone calls) later a new contractor finally turned up and the offending trees were removed. 3 MONTHS!

Both sets of contractors also agreed it was ridiculous.

We have a similar situation - we back on to a small patch of council bush that pretty much no-one else has access to. I called them a few years ago saying there were a bunch of big Taiwanese cherry trees growing there, and could they please remove them.
They apologized saying that they didn't have the budget.

I then asked if I could cut them down, and they were very happy for me to do so. I got a decent bit of exercise, and 2 year's worth of good firewood out of that project.

That Council rates and fees keep going up and up, yet service and services get less and less!

Private enterprise when having monopoly status is just as bad.

Enable installers cut our fibre the other day while installing a new connection nearby, it took me considerable effort to get them to fix the problem they caused, "they" being the new installer team no doubt paid piece rates per install.  They wanted me to lodge a fault report with my ISP, then wait "a coupla days mate" for the bureaucratic process to unwind and eventually send the Enable "fault fixing team" to do a 5 minute job.

Same situation here, we're above what's nominally a reserve which, when we got here, had a human-high mound of brambles several metres across, numerous gorse trees, and a massive privet that was impossible to eradicate until we got a digger to dig out the root ball. Now it doesn't, same area has a lot of native trees, and not the self-sown rubbish that's growing elsewhere down there but ones you can actually appreciate.

Sure, we should probably have asked permission, but given that it's inaccessible no-man's land and we could have spent months going round in circles it was easier to just do it, and are they really going to prosecute someone for clearing gorse, privet, and brambles and replanting in natives?

Good grief, yes. I'm in Whakatane, which apparently has the third highest rates in the country. The council has announced that they're increasing by 22% over the next three years (of course, this was advertised as a smaller rise each year).

Last 10 years available shown.

Year / Rates Revenue:

2009 / $243 Million

2010 / $257 Million

2011 / $273 Million

2012 / $297 Million

2013 / $277 Million (People left after quakes?)

2014 / $330 Million

2015 / $361 Million

2016 / $396 Million

2017 / $426 Million

2018 / $426 Million (Don't remember a 0% Rates Rise!)

It's not like there was any additional CAPEX required after 2011 and 2012.

Oh wait....

I feel any ongoing discussion regarding local body rates should be in the politics rabbit hole.

And the CCC were (Like many other Councils) woefully under insured for most of their assets, so an increased burden was placed on the ratepayer!

Ahh, but do you want to sign up for their newsletter? Also before you've had a chance to look at anything.

Laptops without full keyboards

I need an insert key to use with shift-insert which is a special kind of paste. If the laptop has that it won’t have a dedicated end or page up/down keys, rather those will be shared with the numeric keypad

This DynaBook (aka Toshiba) laptop has a pause/break key which is useful for the system control panel shortcut (now about your system) but has too many functions shared with the numeric keypad. Great laptop otherwise. The power button is immediately above the num lock key. That’s gonna be great for when you need to toggle the num lock to use the aforementioned key functions.

Unfortunately beggars can’t be choosers with the lack choice with stock levels.
