Central government recently announced a major law change around Resource Consents. The law will be relaxed to allow up to three, three-storey dwellings to be built on many pieces of land, with no need for Consent. A result of this will be a greatly increased number of cars parking on residential streets.
Yesterday Auckland Council announced a planned policy which, in some areas, will take away many residents’ right or ability to park on the street where they live. The intention is to force residents to walk, use public transport or cycle instead of using a car. The Council wants to be able to prohibit parking and install bus lanes and cycle lanes - all without being required to consult with Local Boards and affected residents prior to making changes.
Putting aside issues arising from just the Council plan alone, these are conflicting policies - has this world gone mad?
NZ Herald story
Conflicting policies? Maybe from one view, but from another they are complementary.
YOU are the one that has made the correlation between more dwellings and more cars on the streets. A realistic one right now.
Consider this:
Assume the policy is to get people out of their cars and onto public transport.
Public transport is only efficient when the population is concentrated enough to justify it.
So banning cars, and allowing easier building of large apartments makes sense as long as the Public transport infrastructure is there to support it.
Of course the areas where they allow the resource consents, and the areas where they ban cars do have to align...
And this will take time.
And yes it is disruptive and people will hate it because we all NEED our cars right now...
unfortunately that won't change unless somebody forces it.
World gone mad? Hardly. It is probably the sort of thinking that long term planners need to have in mind because a car for every resident in Auckland is just not sustainable.
