Central government recently announced a major law change around Resource Consents. The law will be relaxed to allow up to three, three-storey dwellings to be built on many pieces of land, with no need for Consent. A result of this will be a greatly increased number of cars parking on residential streets.

Yesterday Auckland Council announced a planned policy which, in some areas, will take away many residents’ right or ability to park on the street where they live. The intention is to force residents to walk, use public transport or cycle instead of using a car. The Council wants to be able to prohibit parking and install bus lanes and cycle lanes - all without being required to consult with Local Boards and affected residents prior to making changes.

Putting aside issues arising from just the Council plan alone, these are conflicting policies - has this world gone mad?

NZ Herald story

Conflicting policies?  Maybe from one view, but from another they are complementary.
YOU are the one that has made the correlation between more dwellings and more cars on the streets.  A realistic one right now.

Consider this:

Assume the policy is to get people out of their cars and onto public transport.

Public transport is only efficient when the population is concentrated enough to justify it.

So banning cars, and allowing easier building of large apartments makes sense as long as the Public transport infrastructure is there to support it.

Of course the areas where they allow the resource consents, and the areas where they ban cars do have to align...
And this will take time.
And yes it is disruptive and people will hate it because we all NEED our cars right now...

unfortunately that won't change unless somebody forces it.

World gone mad?  Hardly.  It is probably the sort of thinking that long term planners need to have in mind because a car for every resident in Auckland is just not sustainable.

I was quite annoyed by this as well - they seem to have forgotten certain situations that require Aucklanders to have a car:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Transporting pretty much anything that weighs more than a kilo or is more bulky than a small bag
  • Getting from one side of the city to another
  • Transporting kids to various different places on the same day
  • A day out shopping - carrying several bags of "stuff" that you've bought is not easy on a bike or a bus
  • A trip to Bunnings/Mitre 10
  • Living in Auckland

Clearly you have never been to Amsterdam.

I have...although to be fair it wasn't to partake of a carless trial, while transporting kids and groceries.

BUT...Auckland is vast and hilly and has changeable weather and is not built anything like Amsterdam. Apples and Bicycles, really. Not even Apples and Oranges.

So, what was it to partake of? There's at least two fun leisure activities that I recall there. Concurrently even. šŸ˜€

At the risk of getting a little off topic but on street parking came up in a group chat I'm in, mainly around electric cars. I said no one will buy an electric car if they don't have off street parking.

It led to discussions about resident parking and narrow streets. I'm of the opinion that you buy a property with no parking at your own risk. There was an article in one of the papers about narrow Wellington streets and cars getting ticketed for parking on the footpath. Surely the most sensible answer is to have no parking. Yes that sucks for those living there but from the looks of it most were probably built before multi car ownership was a thing.

As for three floors, well I see it in my street, every house has double garages but almost no one uses them, all full of stuff. All of the on street parks are used. It's just that cars are much more affordable and necessary so most adults will have one. I mean a friend of mine used to live in a seven person flat. They had eight cars! The neighbours hated them.

You can tell which houses are the rentals by the number of cars either parked on the section or on the street outside. Some streets or portions of street are wall to wall cars. Generally number of cars reflects the state of presentation of the property (lawns etc), they just look untidy.

Current gripe - people who don't answer the questions in an email.  I don't mean people who don't reply to emails (that's another problem) - I mean people who have obviously read (or maybe just skimmed) the email, but who provide an incomplete response.  Several occasions in the last 48 hours I've sent emails to professionals (e.g. lawyers) who answer one of the three (clearly marked) questions, and ignore the others.  Or who fail to answer the question and instead answer something else entirely.  Which means another email to follow up, or eventually a phone call (which isn't always helpful, when a written record is needed).  Grrr!

That's why we have electric bicycles these days. Hills are no excuse. And weather really isn't. Western Holland has the worst weather this side of Antarctica. Howling gales, sideways rain, everything that makes Dutch ladies tougher than any Jafa wus.

I’d like to see an electric bike last more than a month of use going up some of our steep Wellington streets carrying an 80kg passenger daily.

Imagine getting from Wainui to the City, using an eBike. Up over the hill (assuming it can be done), hauling a 75-90kg body and then doing the same in reverse! That would have to be a pretty hefty battery!!

I'd argue you dont need a battery - in my youth I lived in Wainui, my love interest at the time lived in Karori. On my treadly every Saturday morning over the hill, into town and up the hill into Karori, followed by the return trip in the afternoon. I had a mountain bike with knobbly tyres and it would take about an hour 15 on the way in, a bit longer on the way home (no incentive to ride home 🤣).

Kids these days...

That would come under the heading of “Trick Cycling” wouldn’t it?

Here is something really small that has really started to annoy me. There is a stock image of a Tongan intersection illustrating an article on RNZ. I got curious about it, then obsessed. Just wasted a day trying to pinpoint it on Google Maps. I managed to trace the image to 123rf.com but all they say is that it is an intersection in Tonga. D'oh.

Careful scrutiny of the image zoomed reveals a street sign: Salote Road. You would think that would be enough but I can't find the damned intersection. Street view has only limited coverage of the road. The aerial shots don't reveal the distinctive rooftop. Maybe the street was burnt down during the riots. I don't know. The street view images are from 2017. There is no indication how old the stock photo is.

This is now really bugging me. If anyone can put me out of my misery, I will be forever grateful.

It appears to be near the corner of Salote and Vuna, facing southwest.
