Someone in Virginia has keyed their email address into their Amazon account incorrectly, so that it's the same as my Gmail address bar one character. Mine has a full stop between the two words and hers does not. Apparently Gmail doesn't recognise the full stop anyway so I'm getting all her order and shipping confirmations.

 

This is harder to stop that you would think. I contacted Amazon to ask them to call their client and ask her to update her email address to the correct one. They said they'd done it but I kept getting them. So I contacted them again and they said they couldn't do anything at their end. Guess what their suggestion was? To email her and ask her to change her account. Um, where do they think the email is going to go?

 

I've set up a filter in Gmail now to delete all emails from them to her, but I can't help thinking how dangerous this is, security-wise. I could quite easily have clicked "forgot password" so that they emailed me the reset information, and from there I could have taken over her account. Amazon seem completely unconcerned about this.

 

Has anyone else had a similar issue? How did you solve it?

I thought you had to be "friends" with someone before you could message them?

Interesting issue. I tend to get a small, but regular, stream of incorrectly addressed e-mails, as I have a range of e-mail addresses for different purposes.  I used to try to get the wrongly addressed ones corrected but after a while I stopped as it seemed more work for me. One particular occasion in took 3 or 4 e-mails to convince the sender, a dentist in England, that they were sending emails to the wrong address. They kept saying "But that is what you typed on our form."!  It was quite funny but I get sick of having to correct others mistakes.

 

If the e-mails are that important then sooner or later the person not getting them should notice and do something about it.

  No, you can message anyone and it send them a friend request along with the message.

 

In the past I had to pay facebook in order to message someone who wasn't friend. Thanks for the tip.

I've had ongoing issues with a number of US based organisations where my gmail address has been entered instead of the correct one. Unfortunately I have a name that can be spelt multiple ways and it's that that appears to mainly cause the issue.

 

Trying to get third party organisations to contact their customer to get their correct email address is pretty well impossible though and most times they just don't get that I'm not actually their customer when I contact them. It's probably happened about six times to me. In a couple of cases I've just unsubscribed myself from their mailing list, because it got too hard trying to convince them what had happened.

Ah, if only I knew what to correct her email address to. 

 

Good to know I'm not the only one who has had trouble rectifying this issue. Hopefully now that Gmail is auto-deleting the emails I won't have to worry about it again. Maybe she'll start to wonder why she's not getting any emails from Amazon and fix it herself. If not, I'll Facebook her. I'm not doing that just yet as it would be tantamount to a Friend request and I don't really want her seeing all my stuff.

I get this on email a lot. I got theatre tickets once, which had the address, which let me look them up find their phone number and call them via Skype. I'm now in loose touch with the guy with the same name who lives a few hours from my parents in law in the UK. He sent me an Amazon gift voucher for continuing to forward him the email that ends up in my inbox, like his rental car for a holiday.
