There's currently a massive beam of light shooting up into the night sky somewhere. It's quite spectacular! When looking from Browns Bay, it looks like it's somewhere behind Rangitoto, how far, I can't tell.

Any ideas what it could be?

Will post a photo, but my phone struggled to pick it up.

My mistake, I only checked stuff before posting. Didn't realise it was on last night as well.

You can lock/delete the thread if you wish.

Here's my terrible attempt at capturing it. Used one of the HDR settings to try get it to stand out more.

Was it switched off when you took that - or was it blacklight from JohnR's black helicopter?

Fourteen paragraphs on that NZ Herald story, with people giving the most absurd theories, followed by only two paragraphs with the explanation. Drivel.

how about Bat S**t signal?

Also wondering why DOC didn't tell everyone about their searchlight plan in advance after Mr Ellis' Rangitoto smoke signal shenanigans... and even though people had been speculating about the arrival of aliens all day.
