Hi guys.

I am thinking about listings some things on EBay, I cant seem to sell a few things on Trade Me, so I thought the bigger audience may increase my chances. Plus in the future I might use it more often (Currently have an account but never bought/sold anything nor bid on anything).

Probably a stupid question, but how does it all work exactly? How do you know the shipping costs to X country? How do you know how much you will be getting with the currency conversion/current rate?

Anybody have any horror stories about buying/selling from certain countries?

Thanks :)

Frieght cost will be too high I imagine. Unless it is something really rare and expensive, I wouldn't think it would be worth it.

I have sold hundreds of collectable items on eBay over the last 5 years.

These are small, coin shaped items which have no market locally.

I list on the main (US) eBay site rather than any of their subsidary sites and it is easy.

You usually get 50 free listings per month (depending on which category you list in); they sting you as much (or even more) success fee than TradeMe does.

You need a PayPal account for payment, and PayPal take a little cut from your money also. Then you can set up PayPal so that you can manually transfer money back to a New Zealand bank account. They do not charge for this if you are transferring $NZ150 or more.  BUT they give you an exchange rate not as good as the actual exchange rate. So this week (I have just transferred some money) it was 1.44

I ship using NZ Post's International AirMail. But I take a hit on the shipping cost as no one wants to pay $13.45 for a tiny parcel from New Zealand.

To work out shipping costs, NZ Post have a shipping calculator to work it out. It works country by country, but for a parcel it is the same rate up to 200gm, and then it starts to increase above that. Most of Europe, the US and Canada are the same rate; South America is more expensive; Pacific and Australia are cheaper.

NZ Post prices will be going up around 10% in June/July ... you might want to take that into consideration.

I stopped trying to sell on eBay when they required tracking on all parcels.

That only left me with Economy Courier to select countries or EMS to all countries - which got really expensive quickly.

I still send without Tracking - I wasn't aware that you absolutely must use tracking. I'm sure when I looked into it you only had to use it if it was available.

In the States they can add tracking internationally for something like $2? Whatever it was it was cheap compared to what it would cost here.

I have a valuable collectors item I'm keen to sell on Ebay but don't have much member history or any knowledge of shipping - any tips?

I do have an Ebay account linked to a paypal account and I'm interested in how Youshop shipping compare to their GSP

Where are you based?

If you are in New Zealand then you don't want to look at Youshop and GSP - they are used for shipping TO New Zealand, not FROM. (GSP is not available here)

Shipping options very limited from NZ, but if it is valuable then you want to look at Economy International Courier, International Courier (both available from NZ Post), or some other service like DHL. That way you will get tracking and appropriate insurance.

Normal international postage only has insurance cover up to $250 unless you take out additional cover.

NZPost already seem like they're significantly more expensive than any overseas post service. Raising prices is taking the p... no wonder volumes are going down.

Actually - parcel prices via International Air Mail didn't change. Not sure what International Courier prices changed by, but when I had a quick look at the new prices I have a feeling that they'd come down, not risen.
