Hi folks,

I have never had to use this kind of service before. Can anyone recommend an outfit that can print digital photos in larger sizes, ie. 8" x 10" or so? I guess it would be preferable if I can email them the images and perhaps pick up the prints when they're ready.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, including any gotchas to watch out for when using this kind of service.

I would recommend you go to Harvey Norman if you have a Fuji camera as their Fuji machine works perfect with Fuji. Acturally there is not much difference in quaulity between different make of the machine if you do not have a very high requirement. There are many different outlet in the market. E.g, Kodak, Camera house, most of the good retailers (Dick Smith, Noelleeming)
Their price may vary depends on the size you are looking for. YOu may join a membership which can save you some bucks.

I used to see one online photo print store in Skycity Auckland. I don't know if there is one in Christchurch. THe best way is to google it. There will be a lot of places available. Acturally they will be cheaper I recon.

I don't know what part of town you're in but any specialised photographic place should do it. As a starting point I would try Paul's Cameras who have a camera store on Riccarton Road but I think they have a dedicated imaging outlet on Clarence Street, just behind the Windmill Centre. Ken's Cameras on Armagh Street would also certainly offer this type of service.

I get my prints done through frogprints.co.nz and I know that they do larger sizes.

I've always tended to use a combination of Digital Max (online orders) and Harvey Norman if I'm wanting prints straight away. Harvey Norman in particular do seem to have very good quality prints, at least from the stores I've used their service. Unlike the old days where film could be under exposed or over exposed by the lab assistant things tend to be a lot more consistant with digital!

The catch with many retailers is that they've slashing prices on 6x4 prints because it's what most people want there are big price differences between retailers with larger size prints and an online retailer such as Frog Prints, Digital Max or Snapfish may offer better pricing than a retail outlet. All of these online stores let you upload the images to their website or to their servers using their own software and either get the photos couriered out or picked up from a retail outlet/agent. It certainly pays to shop around first if you're wanting to get the best price.

Thanks guys - that's given me some ideas. The concensus seems to be that digital photo printing seems to be a bit more consistent in quality, and less operator dependent. I will ring around for prices, etc.
