Geektastic: We have self driving cars. Now we have talking buses!
One bus is nothing, Engelbert Humperdinck has ten guitars that play themselves.

But they're not talking guitars. 🤣

The Stuff quiz again...

"Which year was the popular Pokemon game created by Satoshi Tajiri?" with the possible answers 1986, 1996, 2006 and 2016.

The original release of the game itself begs to differ.

Stuff:

It's not synthetic "cannabis".   Cannabis is a plant.  Calling what they're selling synthetic cannabis is like calling battery acid "synthetic lemon juice" because both act on the same sour taste receptors on your tongue.

I thought that's exactly what it was.

The definition of synthetic

adjective (of a substance) made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product. "synthetic rubber"

What am I missing?

You're missing what I said.  Cannabis is a plant. "Synthetic cannabis" isn't a synthetic plant - not even close.

BTW (natural) rubber isn't a plant - it's a plant extract.

The active ingredients "plant extract" in cannabis are cannabinoids.

Synthetic cannabinoids is what these synthetic drugs should be called.  They frequently kill people in NZ from toxic overdose, the cannabinoids in cannabis do not.  No doubt some people who've died in NZ from using "synthetic cannabis" thought that because "cannabis" can't cause fatal overdose that "synthetic cannabis" was relatively safe.  It is not.

History of the unfortunate nomenclature is that the first cannabinoids discovered were in cannabis, thus the name, then the receptors in the body discovered in the 1990s were called cannabinoid receptors, synthetic chemicals which act on those receptors often called synthetic cannabinoids. some of them are useful therapeutic drugs, and some like the ones being sold to kids are extremely dangerous.

Anyway, that's enough - there have been other discussions / threads in other forums.

I just wanted to point out Stuff's dangerously stupid headline.

Several sources give release date as Feb 1996 (varies between 26th or 27th). Satoshi Tajiri started the development in 1990.

My point was that the game can't have been "created" in 1996 (the answer it wanted) if it was finalised in 1995. Presumably there was then time taken to manufacture the cartridges, etc.

Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things; I still picked 96 and therefore got it right!

If our son had invested all his pocket-money into Apple shares instead of pokemon toys, my SO and I could squander his future inheritance on gluttony and other enjoyable excesses. Every time I weed the garden I find buried pokemon, mutilated by dog teeth.

OT - but I HATE pokemon.

Maybe Stuff do read this thread.  This article today is good:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/125694512/high-school-student-hospitalised-after-smoking-synthetic-drugs

Synthetics drugs - NOT synthetic "cannabis"

I think someone is pulling a leg. The correct term of identification is synthetic cannabinoid or synthetic cannabinoids if more than one cannabinoid is present.

That's what they (*presumably correctly) call it in the text of the article.

*However, those synthetic smoking substances can contain any or many different psychoactive drugs that are not cannabinoids.  They can be either added synthetic or natural drugs of "natural" ingredients of whatever plant base is used.  It's even been found with rat poison in it (brodifacoum).

Ashleigh Barty won the ladies singles title @ Wimbledon last night, emulating her idol Evonne Goolagong (on the 50th anniversary of her first title.) A great day for Australian sport. Stuff are suitably impressed & have published some waffle to recognise the achievement.

Here’s an image from their lead article:

Oh look, royalty!! Let’s talk about these two then.

Any idea who else is in that photo? Obviously the Stuff reporter had no idea because the woman with blonde hair has more tennis Grand Slam titles than anybody else - Martina Navratilova was winning mixed doubles GS titles in her late 40s, her total of 59 GS wins is a magnificent achievement - and the dark haired woman is the only King in that photo - Billie-Jean King, owner of 37 GS titles herself - those two women own 96 Grand Slam titles between them. True tennis royalty.

An article about the ladies Wimbledon final which includes a photo of Ms Navratilova & Ms King yet fails to recognise them is an embarrassment for the journalist. Feeble reporting.

Today we had terrible weather as most will know.

Imagine my amazement to find this in a report in Stuff then:

"A no swimming notice is in place in Porirua harbour,"
