Sidenote: It still baffles me that in NZ it is still mainstream to use a 12 hour clock in just about every scenario.  (I grew up in continental Europe where, even back in the 1970s , in anything but informal conversation, using a 24 hour clock was the norm, particularly in written dialogue, whether it be newspaper articles, timetables, doctor's appointment notes, railway station signage, etc.).  Would have been zero ambiguity if they'd written "20:30 on Saturday" in the article.

Apart from that, it baffles me that anyone freaks out when an adult woman is offered a legal job opportunity in a legitimate industry.

Herald headline:

“Jean Salter murder: Husband John Salter, 80, claims Mount Maunganui pair made a suicide pact before he killed her”

Start of article below headline:

“advisory:This article mentions suicide”

Well. Who’d have guessed that from the headline?

Mentions suicide. There was a suicide pact, but only a murder.

Not if it was her choice. There is nothing dirty about sex.

This morning Stuff has an article asking for the public's comment on the current three year election cycle.

The article asks for "comments below", but comments aren't open and there isn't a poll.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300995639/how-do-you-feel-about-the-three-year-election-cycle

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to comment, but perhaps after reading this post Stuff might open comments up?

Shocking fail from Stuff this morning

Stuff: A quick handshake with a few audience members, a brief visit to the bathroom against the side wall of the hall and NZ First leader, Winston Peters with

Terrible phrasing and I doubt we really need to know about political leaders bathroom visits.

New Zealand Herald: "Jewish consulate in Auckland hit by graffitt and arson attempt overnight"

Nope. That would be Israeli consulate. Saying it's "Jewish consulate" makes me think it's a racist headline.

Also "graffit" typo.

The article has now been updated, although the URL still shows it: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/jewish-consulate-in-auckland-hit-by-graffitt-and-arson-attempt-overnight/EM3NVJ6QXZDS3KMC3KEXC7AHEQ/

Looks like the NZ Herald article made exactly the same mistake as the graffiti makers - relying on Google maps for accurate descriptions. The Stuff article is much clearer.

https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/301004589/auckland-jewish-community-centre-vandalised

The property is not an Israeli Consulate at all.

Things like don't do anything to assuage me of my unfounded suspicion that the Herald has high school journalism students writing articles in exchange for course credit.

Errors are common with fast breaking stories in the internet age and errors stick around longer compared to yesterday's paper. Articles are updated continuously.

I think that's fair enough but there needs to be a much higher standard applied for subject matter where any error of fact can have enormously disproportionate impact. Senior reporters should be assigned immediately for stories of that nature.

Meanwhile, over on News.com.au, the headline "Reason for Optus blackout revealed" leads to a 17-paragraph article that doesn't reveal the reason.
