CNN: "Biden drops campaign ad adressing his age"

I hate this shit. Has he abandoned the ad or is he implementing it? If you must change the language, at least be clear about it!

I’m sure someone will be “across” the story and they will let us know “what they can tell us”.

There will be a live cross to "tell us what we need to know".

It appears to be an experiment. I'm not impressed. It has the appearance of being horribly recursive. I'm not sure I see the value in using AI to summarise the comments on your own article and printing that summary as a new article. Commenters will presumably now comment on this new article. I predict this won't live long in its current form.

People will be commenting on a story that's just comments.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/511516/latam-flight-technical-problem-likely-behind-incident-aviation-expert-says

Some passengers had to spend hours dealing with Immigration on Monday night, and when they arrived at midday on Monday as directed, no LATUM staff were around.

At 2pm they were told they could not check in until 4pm.

"Since then, they've just been hanging around asking questions - what is going on?"

Some passengers were nervous to be getting on another LATUM flight.

At least give LATAM the courtesy of correct spelling.

It's a Latin American company, so they must be using Latin, surely?

On a different note, LATAM was originally a regional company called TAM - Transportes Aereos Marilia (Marilia being a small city in Sao Paulo state, Brazil). It was founded by Captain Rolim, who later died in a helicopter accident.

After VARIG went bankrupt, TAM expanded to national (Brazil) and eventually buying LAN Chile and becoming the largest Latin American airline.

The company expanded during the 90s with Fokker 27 and Fokker 100 aeroplanes. I remember it well because I used TAM to fly weekly between my hometown to Sao Paulo, for work, from 1993 to 1997. I used it so much, one weekend I had to get to Sao Paulo for an emergency, the airport manager let me on the plane without a ticket, which he later got from my travel agent during the week.

Commander Rolim was famous for standing at the door of some flights in Congonhas (Sao Paulo CGH) multiple times a day, sometimes flying the round trip just so he could talk to passengers.

On 31 October 1996, Flight TAM 402 crashed during take off from CGH. I was in Sao Paulo on that day and received many phone calls asking if I was ok. Lucky it was a day before my flight out of the city.

This is possibly more for the smile thread, but I recently saw a suggestion for a new company motto for Boeing: "If it's Boeing, I'm not going".

gzt: I'm not sure I see the value in using AI to summarise the comments on your own article and printing that summary as a new article.

You're looking at it from the point of view of a news consumer.

From the point of view of the news publisher, it generates two apparently different articles from one set of wages, so potentially doubles the income from each worker.

However, they haven't factored in the dilution of the information in their output, which will inevitably result in the departure of more readers/viewers. Because the whole point of newspapers, and radio news sessions, and TV news programs, and news websites, is to condense a whole lot of news into a small but thorough but understandable package.

Story in NZH today about the recent LATAM flight incident says: “About 50 of the Dreamliner’s 272 crew were injured when it …. “.

I wonder if they do any proof reading before publishing? Not unusual to see missing or double words, or just parts of sentences that don't make sense. Probably don't have spellcheck turned on either.

Also RNZ and others. It seems to be getting worse and worse. It is a mystery, especially with the tools available today.
