RNZ has become particularly bad with proofreading and image selection. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I imagine it has to do with inadequate funding though that is no real excuse for a supposed news organisation and it does make one wonder about the quality of their reporting.

Images have become especially bad. If there is an accident or police incident, they often just publish a Google Maps image of the location. In the distant past, a reporter might have actually visited the location to take a photo and interview witnesses. Times sure have changed.

I have seen this stock image more times than I can count.

RNZ staff are pretty thin on the ground in the "regions" also most accident reporting is generated of the police or NZTA press release that pops up in the Sub-editors inbox.

So, We have a breaking news banner for a story that it is
One journalist interviewing another journalist to conclude that they have no idea what Trump will do next....

Well I think we are all happier knowing that....

https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/04/09/beware-of-selling-an-old-phone-your-bank-details-are-probably-still-on-it/

Headline:

Beware of selling an old phone: your bank details are probably still on it

Quote from article

An analysis of secondhand [sic] mobile devices found that 35% still contained recoverable data after being reset and resold.

So 35% would be more of a possibly than probably, unless bank details are somehow more like cockroaches and harder to get rid of.

Article about my local, Wilson BBQ closing down:

Wilson Barbecue ceased trading on April 1 after four-and-a-half years owing more than $600k to the IRD.

What is it? "Closed after four-and-a-half years, some of it owing money to IRD" or "closed after owing money to IRD for four-and-a-half years"?

I know they have been open here for four-and-half-years so I suspect it's the first, but again, who knows? Stuff didn't make it clear...

Probably an indication of the drop in teaching standards with respect to grammar. A missing comma can totally change the meaning of a sentence.

The Herald offers us this example, presumably written by a small child with an undeveloped command of English:

“would have costed nearly $4 billion in 2024.”

Maybe written by someone fluent in a dozen languages but English isn't their mother tongue.

Plane passenger shoots, kills US hijacker on Belize flight - AFP - 18 Apr, 2025 11:47 AM

Now I know The Herald has taken this from another news source but even so. It appears that the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft now has the ability of hovering, so that also presumes it has VTAL ability as well.

"The plane hovered for some time over the international airport of Belize City before landing just as it was about to run out of fuel, at which point the hijacker stabbed two fellow passengers."

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

Perhaps it was the result of a union between a Grand Caravan and an Osprey?

Stuff:  Two-vehicle crash blocks both lanes of SH1 near Sheepworld

ok, so somewhere in NZ then.  Helpful.

Not all of us have the entire countries tourist landmark locations committed to memory - ANY additional information would have been useful.

My first thought was ...
https://www.bachcare.co.nz/blog/sheep-and-dog-of-tirau/

Maybe the Dome Forrest, Warkworth would have ticked all the boxes for everyone across the country.
Surely they are not clipping ticket on advertising in the same way internet searches are now modified to bring up a host of commercial products with similar names or loosely related to your real search ?

Does anyone from the Herald or Stuff read this topic ??

Perhaps freitasm should send them an invite and then they should donate a fee for this forums members doing their job of editing 😁
