I have an English friend that calls his rowter a rooter.

I say Root as in Root66, or Rowt as in I want to rowt that internet traffic through there.

In NZ the main office rooter usually works in sales or marketing. Avoid any potentially awkward chats with HR and stick to your rowting.

English is a weird language. I use both. Otherwise certain people think you're weird.

If you have a problem getting a Gif, from an Ess Que Ell database, it's possible the rowter needs a reboot.

Thanks for the suggestion @sleemanj. Following your advice, I tried kicking the router, and now it's rooted :-(

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

To rhyme with root unless you're a septic.

The word is an Old English one (so it is French) - as are many English words that start with an R.  Knowing this helps it get pronounced correctly.  The E on the end is silent and its purpose is to extend the sound of the previous vowel.   So  its  pronounced rout   (rowt) also in old French there is a slight emphasis on the 't' as well.  The word used to mean  'to hollow out' so we have the modern tool 'router'.

Also, in old English, a 'w' before an 'r' becomes silent,  so 'wrot' which is pronounced root, means 'to dig' in the manner of a pig.

Finally, the Old English word is rute which is of French origin (because of the R) and is pronounced 'roota'  (roo teh) which means 'path'.

Glad I could clear that up for you.

Because the Graphics Interchange Format should logically be pronounced with a soft 'g'?

<snort> Giraffics Interchange Format...

Because the guy who invented the format says it's JIF

I've seen people argue that because the G stands for "graphics", and graphics has the non-J sound (I don''t know whether it's "soft" or "hard"), that GIF should therefore be pronounced with the non-J sound.

I can see the logic there, and can therefore conclude that those same people pronounce JPEG as "jay-feg", since the P stands for "photo".
