Many small towns have a LOT of other empty shops, so those stores will likely remain empty.

Agree with that. Towns like Thames spring to mind. A few empty shops, now one more empty shop. The DSE there was in an OK location, but rents will have to be pretty sharp for the landlord to fill it as there are a few other empty stores along the main drag.

Not sure what Hamilton is like, but last time I went into the city on a weekend, it was a ghost town (tumbleweed and all). Everyone in Hamilton it seems was out at The Base (and, why wouldn't you - free parking and lots of it). They may have issues filling the City store site.

Update on the Christchurch sites. The Palms big To Let signs all over the windows. Northwood. No sign of a new tenant, just a lot of old display shelves left behind. Hornby. Much the same as Northwood except for a shattered glass door. Riccarton, nothing new to see through the peephole. So 3 weeks since the closure a big zero!

On Friday, DSE Mid-Queen Street had large "Construction Site" and "LEASED" signs with a Hazard Notification Board at the bottom of the escalators, so something happening there.  They haven't bothered removing the under-awning sign yet though.

Wonder if they're looking to move there or they were just taking fixtures and fittings..

Were they measuring floor space or the fittings?

They were at the door with a measuring tape, I wasn't paying too much attention

Signs of life at the Riccarton Mall ex Dick Smith shop.    Lights were on today.   The big counter on the lower level has been ripped out.    The area behind the counter has fresh plastering & maybe new gib board.    The 'Clever Dick' sign has been ripped out & put to one side.    That is all I could see through the 10 cm peephole.    I don't think they have done much on the upper level yet.

For anyone interested I can now confirm it is JB-Hifi that has taken over the Riccarton Mall site

Now I wonder just what will be in-store?

Any car audio? I'm guessing none...

How much will be whitegoods / small goods? I'm picking at least 40%...

The changing face of JB's may mean that the Riccarton Noel Leeming will need to evolve its whitegoods holding in order to look competitive.

AFAIK It will be a full JB home store with whites, smalls, TV/AV, IT and software/games

I work at one of the last stores to have any major amount

Johnsonville  mall in Wellington also looks to have problems with a lack of people going to it. A really big drop off in visitors. Not sure if it did have a DSE in it . It is interesting how much online stores have affected these places.

There was a DSE in Johnsonville but not part of the mall, was on the main street around the corner.

To be fair, online won't be the issue with the Johnsonville Mall, the Johnsonville Mall is the issue with the Johnsonville Mall...

Doesn't the mall have issues with the wellington council as it won't allow modernization and expansion  because the WN council thinks it will hurt the Wellington CBD retailers??
