So a video has been released which shows what the final product will look like.

What I kept thinking watching that video, was how much empty space was everywhere! Real estate is so expensive in the city, surely they could fill it with shops, or make it smaller or something!?!

Was thinking the same thing.  By the time this gets operational in 2022  I'll be long gone from here though I may come back for a ride..

Sydney got its loop in 1956, Melbourne in 1985, so Auckland in 2022 is probably a few years late, but welcome none the less, - 

 

Hopfully it will not suffer the bizarreness that is peak and off peak in melbourne :)

People take up space. Hundreds and thousands of people take up a lot of space. 

 

The South Concourse at Central Station in Sydney is a big, wide, long corridor......This is how it looked a few days ago around 5pm on a weekday. 

When the CRL first opens there may appear to be lots of space. Twenty years later? You can't water it and it'll grow. You have to build for THAT day. Over crowding in concourses and platforms can get people killed.

They don't take that much space! We have 1.4m people in Auckland, bugger all of who take public transport, and even less who would use this particular thing. 

 

I don't argue it shouldn't be built, I argue there is too much waste valueable space.

As well you should. I don't smoke, but the council builds smoking areas that I pay for. Smoking shelters are a lot less useful than train stations.

Well your bus motorways were funded by govt and Auckland council money, and those motorways are hugger all use to me living in South Auckland as well but I still contributed none the less.

This "thing" will let people ride one train from Henderson to Manakau, Onehunga to Britomart then through to Papakura. 

 

The CRL will be the pumping heart in the centre of the Auckland commuter rail system. I already use rail most days.

 

The stats make it clear that train ridership is growing rapidly (now over 16 million rides / year) and more people are using rail every year. Total public transport rides in a year - all modes is now close to 85 million.  That's an everage 50 rides each for each man, woman and child in the city every year...and growing by double digits even now.....and the CRL isn't built yet. 

 

This is about the future. I know some people can't see past next week. But someone has to. When talking about infrastructure you have to look decades ahead...and in only 14 years there will be 2.2 million in Auckland....and it won't be stopping there. 

 

The CRL is already 4 decades late.

That requires a second harbour crossing. This government won't do much to support rail. They're owned by the trucking / bus lobbies. That's why they have dragged their feet on anything to do with rail since Tony Friedlander (of the trucking company family) was Minister of transport under Muldoon in the early 80s. He's guy who took the 150km limit off trucking of goods.....and filled the highways with trucks.....without building new highways.   

 

Not enough people know the long history of this. If you want better public transport, you don't vote for National (or their local clones). It was Muldoon's government who killed off the urban rail project in Auckland in the 1970s.

i doubt it will be heavy rail due to cost and gradient required so it wont tie into that

I see where you're coming from but I don't think it is necessary. The busway works really well at the moment, even better since the addition of more double deckers. As for the future, simply add more buses to the network as the demand increases.

Bugger all of us south of the bridge use the Northern busway, yet it was funded by more than the northern councils of the time.

 

The CRL will allow more buses into the city centre (which will benefit the shore as at present over 40% of those crossing the bridge are doing it on a bus), and allow the possibility of rail to the shore (which it should have)
