A rather dismal payoff for anyone who won last night's Lotto. Barely covers a moderate home deposit in Auckland.

Buying a town in the USA is out of the question with NZ $143,000.

A number of US towns have been sold, usually at the US one million to 15 million price, and 7 to 50 residents.

The most famous recent town purchaser is actress Kim Basinger, something she later regretted.
