If this kind of thing is important to you guys why don't you take a holiday in Hong Kong or Thailand and have them made for a fraction of the price while having a good time?

Singapore has better suitmakers in my experience, than in HK. I believe a few years ago suitmakers in HK were better, but twice I've been to both, both times the suits were (significantly) better from Singapore.
Bangkok used to be okay - was years ago that I had suits made there, not sure what it's like now. You did need to take a bit of care though - do not shop for the lowest price. There are very many places that will make you knock-off Hugo Boss etc complete with original looking embossed lining and label, but they're usually poor quality fabrics and tailoring. The good tailors seemed to be of Sikh Indian descent - who'd moved into the business after having had a long history - going back many generations - dealing in the textile trade in the region. They were very honest and nice people to deal with. There's not a lot of haggling room here unlike the typical street tailors, probably find that they might offer a discount if you buy several suits, but the first quoted price is about as good as you'll get. You need to set aside some time, On visits to Bangkok, I think we went back to the store daily for 3 or 4 days days, took about an hour (or more) each visit for fitting and adjusting. SWMBO was actually working for a well-known French fashion house at the time (as a product manager and assistant to the Asia/Pacific manager for couture). She took some fashion magazines with her - and had them make up designs based on those - I think getting some of those made up took a little longer, they managed to get exact matches for details like buttons. The quality of tailoring, fabrics etc was excellent. The very best business suits and shirts I've ever owned - and they lasted years. Not sure if they'd do the knock-off embossed lining and fake labels - probably not, I wouldn't even ask as it's a little tacky and unnecessary IMO.
I see the business we dealt with is still running. https://www.majesticsuites.com/tailoring.php in fact I think the photo show the owner, Mr Singh IIRC, looking much the same, just a little older.
I have a suit I got made in Bangkok probably 15 years ago. An outfit called Tony's Fashion House.
The Suit still looks good today (IMHO). I need to lose a few pounds to make it fit properly though :). From memory it was about 250-300NZD. A Wool/Cashmere blend AFAIK.
I'd like to get some sports jackets made if I'm ever back there.
On the subject of Suits.. anyone know a good site to order asian custom made suits at a reasonable price?
I found a few websites when I looked awhile ago that would custom make suits and ship them worldwide for a few hundred bucks, but I didn't have the forethought to bookmark them.

http://ansfashions.com/ visits NZ regularly and you can get measured. They then make and ship from Hong Kong. I can't see any prices on the site but I recall them being reasonable.

Yes, I sometimes see ads on Sunday papers (at parents-in-law, no I don't buy papers) with notices for some of the visiting tailors - you can get measured and get some deals. But I am always curious how they can get something like this done without at least one fitting session...

freitasm:It's machine. A tailored one at Working Style will set you back $2000. One closed in Wellington CBD (Taranaki St) and there's one on Dixon St but I am not confident it's keeping up with style. If you have suggestions for Wellington ones I'd like to know.
