So...  thought Id work on some settings on my home router....straight away broke the network admins #1 rule.

DONT PLAY WITH NETWORK SETTINGS REMOTELY. Because when it goes down (and it will), you're stuffed.

Guess what.... Im stuffed. Angry wife. Angry kids. Angry friends who use my domain for email which is hosted at home.

Even called Voyager, "hey guys, can you remote in and turn off that rule I enabled" "Uh... we cant even get in".

****

I dont know if I want to go home tonight foot-in-mouth

Been there, done that :)

I once had to get my father to revert a change on their router via a phonecall and guesswork.

For emergencies, hide a sealed envelope with the means to restore the last backup of the router configuration.

Likewise for your password manager, in event of death.

I had something similar, but not that big of an issue since I had two cheap routers and not that much running on it. So my wife plugged in the other one.

Yep done this. I may however have blamed it on "the internet being down" to buy myself some additional time.

Real men don't keep backups. They master the art of router configuration via a precisely timed series of power cycles.

that remind me of my first month of work, just out of uni, back in the 90's,when change control, what that, need to apply a patch - install during day and reboot, user do not need the server... ah those great time for patching, any way, the senior IT person told me to do a network change on novell 3.1 server - you edit a file with the new setting then you save the change, then you unload network stack, then reload - had trouble with the last bit..... senior IT person "you should have used a batch file for that"... next thing i learned was the server is 8 hour from my office, 2 hour from the nearest IT office, I also learned that you should ask the person on how he going to get to server when you ask them to go and sort out, turns out he did not have a driver's license, so he called a taxi for a 4 hours round trip - think the taxi driver was the only happy person when the boss found out.....

I don't know why, but there is a weird satisfaction with managing your own email. Maybe not from home though, I play with my router too often (compiling custom firmware and testing, etc.) at the moment to even think that would be an option.

Edit: and (very) fortunately for me, I live with a very good friend who is understanding of my need to tinker and is happy as long as I set her up with the ability to watch movies/tv shows without too much interruption while messing with the network.

There is nothing worse than sitting trying to fix the last balls up while someone stares at you accusingly from across the room...

Oh my early HTPC years were an adventure, and my lady is so tolerant.

Oh don't get me wrong, playing with stuff is always fun but email is not something someone should host at home anymore.  Not when there is ways to attach your domain to gmail/outlook/other service from very little to no monthly cost. Just not worth the headache if others depend on it (like in this case).
