Thanks @Lizard1977 :) Those Drymax socks are a lot cheaper from Amazon, even with postage. I'll get a pair next time I do an amazon order, and might try other brands as well, if I find any worth trying.

I wear some chunky shoes, but my dress shoes are relatively slim line. Are the drymax more like a thin dress sock or a tramping / hiking sock?

I'd say they were somewhere between the two.  I've worn slim dress socks before, and had some Thorlo hiking socks.  The Thorlos were chunkier (fluffier?) but more due to the way they were woven, and the type of material used.  I'd say if your dress shoes are a snug fit with thin dress socks, then they might be a bit tight with these Drymax socks.  But there may be other Drymax models that are thinner.  Personally, I'd feel comfortable taking a punt on their other socks, based solely on how great the socks I already have are.

Mr Davis socks are looking like a good option, at US$12 each. Shame shipping is $12 for a pair and $20 for two pairs.

I can't speak to any specifics, but I always buy like 30 identical pairs when I buy them, and then I never have trouble matching them up.

That'd cost $900 with the Thorlo socks. I buy a dozen or so.

Yeah admittedly though, I wouldn't be spending $30 per pair for socks. I think my last lot cost me $200 and lasted a good 5 years. (I don't have 30 in rotation at a time).

It seems to take me no time at all to go through the toe of most socks (that being said I've never gotten particularly expensive socks - mainly Jockey Gold Top etc). I've changed to Holeproof and haven't gone through a toe yet.

@Paul1977

You didn't happen to be wearing Hush Puppies shoes at the time, did you.  I found with the combination of those shoes and Goldtop socks I'd be through the toe after the 2nd or 3rd wear.  (Other socks fared somewhat better but would still suffer the same fate - i've stopped buying Hush Puppies.)

The first 5 days after the weekend are the hardest.

No, it's happened for years with various different pairs of shoes. I have long big toes (not circus freak long, but longer than all the others), and it just doesn't seem to take much time for them to work their way through the end of a sock.

I'd never considered that the type of shoe might be contributing though.

I buy the $12 "Darn Tough" socks from the warehouse, they aren't to thick or thin. I don't get hot feet in summer or cold feet in winter. The come in limited colours and I buy the same colour every time. I have about 8 pairs and because they are the same colour you don't have to worry about odd socks.

I've found All Day Socks to be pretty good. I used to just buy budget brands, and would constantly find a hole in the toe. These seem much better.

Another alternative to the link I gave earlier would be to do it online from Marks & Spencer in the UK.

I have M&S pants and socks that have lasted 10 years...!

I've been using these, and they are reasonable for the price, but of the 12-15 pairs I have currently (none older than 18 months) at least 3-4 have holes, and I've biffed a couple already. I was really hoping they'd last a bit longer.
