I ordered a couple of pairs to try. My impressions are:

  • Drymax mens crew are ok to good. They're not just a tube, they have shape. They have a little bit of cushioning. However compared with my old model Thorlo they're significantly warmer.
  • Wigwam airlite pro socks aren't so good. They're just a tube, they have no padding, and they're quite warm. If you have an incredibly tight shoe this might be ok.

I might have to try the new model Thorlo socks, even though the reviews all says they're not near as good as the old model.

We're looking at replacing our socks so thanks everyone for the great info.

We've had great success with two types of socks which we are planning to buy more of if we can get them. We've tried all sorts of socks that don't come close to the durability and comfort of these socks. That includes expensive hiking socks from Macpac and Kathmandu, expensive and cheap dress socks from Farmers, The Warehouse, etc.

  • Julius Marlow socks that I was given with a pair of shoes at Banks Shoes in Lower Hutt. They were medium-thickness dress socks. I threw them out last month after five years of wearing them at least once a week. From memory they were $25+ a pair.
  • Possum-wool blend socks. We bought them from the Woolyarns factory shop in Lower Hutt. The shop isn't open now but I think that they still have a sale once a year. Presumably, those socks are for sale from a company that Woolyarns supplies yarn to.

I'll have a look at NZSocks next time I'm at farmers. I'm not a huge merino fan, but mixed with other things it can be ok.

I don't like merino or wool (itchy) because they make my feet too hot.
