It is pretty social, but probably a precursor to traditionally what people call social media. I guess we could all start threads that are our 'timeline' to mimic it?

I would say GZ is absolutely social media (as are all online forums). It's not social networking, but internet forums easily slide into the definition of social media.

With ability to PM and/or use the Slack channel as well as blog, then sure it could be "social networking" IMO - if the user wants to use it that way.

Social media, IMO, has strong narcissistic themes, GZ has more of a hobby/enthusiasts theme.

Back to the original question, I do not have a smart phone (although I do carry an old nokia). I have no need to carry a portable computer in my pocket and I find my self on edge waiting for them to break - who thought it would be a good idea to carry around a 5" sheet of glass in your pocket?

I read that Nokia were going to reintroduce a modernised version of one of their classic phones.

If that's true, I'd probably get one.

While I do own a phone, I remember many years ago feeling the OP's pain in relation to "having" to put a number in a form, albeit was the land-line number that was compulsory.  My living arrangements at the time meant I didn't have a number at all - yes, I could have just written some rubbish in there, but it was more the principle of the matter.  Now I'm older, I haven't had a land-line since naked internet was an option, and yet when that first came out, you still 'had' to have a land line to fill forms out. I was certainly glad when most companies removed that restriction, but hadn't realised that some had moved it across to the mobile option. Surely as long as there was "some" form of number, that should suffice.

@Coil - That looks distinctly like 'John Deere Yellow' under what remains of your phone ;)

My last non-smart phone was a tiny Samsung flip-phone.  Fit in any pocket, seemed indestructible, battery lasted for many days.  Not sure how cheap they were, we got them free as used/surplus phones from my wife's work.

Our son dropped one into salt water off the back of our boat. Water was only about 10 feet deep, was in the evening, son was bemused as to what the flashing light in the water was.  Stripped it down, flushed in fresh water, dried it out on deck, put battery back in when it was dry, no problems.

Lock him up!

Hey! This thread is supposed to be for people who don't want phones!
