Has anyone brought any high value items (NZ$400+) from Amazon UK/FR/DE/IT recently? Is the GST already pre-paid by Amazon or did you get stung by customs?

Here's a screenshot from Amazon UK's checkout page. Notice the unusually low 'import fees deposit' value compared to the actual GST rate.

who knows. try it. but my educated guess is that you will get a telephone call from customs to pay before they release your item. thevalue of the item will flag to customs when your package is on its way to NZ and they will get their money one way or another.

after that you will have to apply for a refund of the import duties from amazon - if they didn't pay it you will get it back (takes months).

From About Amazon import fee deposits:

"For AmazonGlobal items, you won't be charged additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Fees Deposit we estimated. For items sold by Amazon Marketplace sellers, please check the seller's policies.

If the actual Import Fees are less than the Import Fees Deposit collected by us on your behalf, you'll automatically be refunded the difference to the payment method you used for the order. You'll receive a notification e-mail confirming the amount of the refund. The process takes 60 days from the shipment date."

The UK page says:

"For items sold by Amazon EU Sarl or Amazon Export Sales LLC, you won't be charged any additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Fees Deposit amount we estimated. For items sold by other Marketplace Sellers, please check the applicable Seller's policies."

I would just be ordering it and hoping for the best in that case. Amazon promised that is all it would be so if its more then just cancel the order and get a refund.

I've gone over $400 NZD with Amazon US. One was about $1000 and the other was $750NZD. Custom, import and what ever other fees were included in the price.

Came straight to my door. No hassles...
