I'm not a smoker myself, but my father is and his birthday is in a couple of weeks, and I am think of getting him a vaporiser. He is getting older and his breathing is getting worse, but he has proven time and again that he either can't quit smoking, or just doesn't really want to.

At this point I'm thinking trying to get him to change to vaping has to be a better alternative than to continue smoking. He'd never go out and but one himself, so I'm hoping he will use one if I get it for him.

Where is the best place to buy a vaporiser, what ones are good, what sort of nicotine level e-liquid should I get?

He currently smokes (according to him) 10-12 a day of Rothmans Blue.

https://www.ejuicebar.co.nz/ has two stores, one in Tauranga and one in Rotorua. You could flick them a message for some info.

Whatever you do, DON'T buy from the chain mall stores (Cosmic & Shosha) as they are a completed ripoff. A few places I can recommend:

https://thevapeshop.nz/ online or Wellington Central

https://vapourium.nz/ online, two Dunedin stores

https://hoopersvapour.co.nz/ online or Christchurch store

https://www.facebook.com/LayersEmporium/ Wellington Central

http://www.jocksvapes.co.nz/ Online or Upper Hutt

I'd start with starter kits, I'm on 3rd eleaf product and had no issues apart from 1 year of use it looses it's coating, but for the price under $30 NZD, I can't complain.

eg. iStick Pico 75W Starter (under $25 off ebay)

For a start you could order ejoyce from NZ (do they allow to sell nicotine ejoyce too?) if not, try american or european shops, don't buy from China.

molinshop.com - is my go to shop, but their delivery fee from 18 EUR (used to be 5 EUR :() I buy 3 x 100ml nic base 9-12mg.

Also is your father is long time smoker, get him at least 12-18mg nicotine, as he won't feel anything below that. And then move to 6-9-12mg.

Only for the last 50 years. Sounds like 18mg will be the way to go. Thanks for that.

I've been vaping for a few years now - just don't buy from Cosmic and Shosha (even juice).

Some other places I'd recommend:
Gear, Coils etc - https://thevapingkiwi.co.nz/ - specifically the Aspire K3 Kit is a good starter.
Juice - http://www.shelley.co.nz/ - ask in the comments of the order what nicotine. For somebody coming from Smoking this much I would recommend around 12mg Nicotine.
Other Juice (what I vape) - https://www.eliquids.nz - Requires registration but pretty good.

If you're based in Wellington there is Layers Emporium who have opened up on Cuba Street. They have a good range of devices and Vapeorium juice and best of all at the same price the Vapeorium store sells them at. The chaps that work there are very helpful too.

I'm in Christchurch, so will likely purchase online.

Vapingkiwi has a good selection.

I was thinking he might be better with something a little smaller than the A3, closer to the size of a cigarette, while he gets used to it. However I am concerned about the battery life of the slimmer models, such as the Eleaf iCare 140.

@Paul1977 the Icare is a good unit - I wouldn't go with those cigarette sized ones as the batteries simply don't last long on then (and they don't generate too much vapour). The Icare is charged by micro USB so that's a bonus too. If you're going for that as a start then you're best to grab the liquid from Shelley's since it has a touch more PG (at a 75/25 ratio - VG/PG) and also grab a pack of coils while you're at it. Should keep him going for a bit.

@michaelmurphy I note the strongest Shelleys do is 12mg, do you think that's strong enough for a smoker of 50 years? I had been looking at nzvapor.com as they do 18mg, but no one has mentioned them.

The goal at this point isn't to cut down the nicotine, just to get him of the smokes.

My father in law, smoker now for 68 years.

He'd given up about a year ago, has started again over the past couple of weeks.  Dammit.

I've been the one to have to take him to A&E on several occasions or to meet the ambulance there - when he's had cardiac arrest and or stroke symptoms.  Question number one after they've figured out that he's alert enough to answer is "are you a smoker?".  This sets him off into rant mode - usually directed at Dr trying to keep him alive.  Rant usually starts with "I've been a smoker for 68 years", then moves to career advice for Dr - to give up being a doctor as there's no future in the profession, as once all the smokers have gone they'll have nothing to do as the hospitals will be empty.  Better switch to being an entertainer like a clown - as the entire population will need them to avoid dying from boredom.  This goes down really well of course.  I've never seen a Dr even smile.  I give up - there's nothing we can do.

12 should be fine. I smoked for 30+ years and used 12 no worries (and I smoked very strong rollies that made rothmans look soft.)

Yes 12mg is plenty for somebody coming from smoking. Basically to get him off I would recommend grabbing:

iCare 140: https://thevapingkiwi.co.nz/eleaf-icare-140-kit
Coils: https://thevapingkiwi.co.nz/eleaf-ic-icare-coil-heads (comes in a 5 pack)
Liquid: One of the Sample packs - http://www.shelley.co.nz/samplepack.php - Coffee Creme is one of my favorites from there too just so he can try a selection.

Should be good for I would say a touch over a month of vaping (liquid wise) and from there he can decide which flavors he likes and go from there. With the sample packs I'd always recommend grabbing a wide selection - the flavors I have tried and love are:

Coffee Creme - my absolute favorite from there.
Miami Juice - Menthol with fruity flavors, very nice.
Dragon Slayer - a more sour fruity note.
Kiwi gone Bananas - Something a little different.

I find the Tobacco flavors really don't taste too much like it (it is hard to make vapor resemble poison). If you're doing it as a surprise then grab one anyway (Rye Reserve) for him to try otherwise just pick one that sounds good.
