Tinkerisk:

This stone gargoyle Alien on a church (in Saint-Jean-de-Boiseau/France). Apparently, the depiction of the contemporary evil of mankind has also arrived in historical architecture.

I was wondering whether the picture was legit, a quick check and it is, the chapel was restored 1993-1995 to include modern pop culture references.

Both those churches look pretty clean. Still, good images of scary things to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

A couple of things made me smile over the weekend.

Finished a 100km Ultra Marathon on Sunday morning.  Second attempt after failing at 60km last year (covid 6 weeks prior doe snot make for a good training plan).  Took a mere 21 hours 12 minutes to complete.  No matter what time of day or night, whenever my crew and supporters could get to me, they did so with masses of enthusiasm and encouragement.  Definitely caused a few smiles.

The other thing was the satellite texting that's now built in to One NZ plans with a new enough phone.  Given a large chunk of the course had patchy or no coverage, I was still able to keep my crew updated with how I was going so they could better coordinate meeting me at the aid stations.

Congratulations. I was down in Rotorua from 7am to 7pm on Saturday in a spectator capacity. I hope to be back next year as a participant.

It was an awesome day with so many incredible athletes out there at all levels. What I love about the sport is it doesn't matter what your ability is, everyone covers the same course. And the elites at the front of the field are in awe of the mid-packers just as much as we are of them.

This is a pretty transparent and appropriate response to an incident, from a Iconic Kiwi Brand.

We back of the pack runners get far better value for money than the elites do.  I took 3 times the length of time Dan Jones did and most likely had more food at the aid stations also.

The real heroes are the vollys who are on the course for longer than anyone.  Medics and marshals in random places.  Aid stations that keep pumping for up to 36 hours and in most cases, can't do enough to help the runners keep going.

Wow dude, that doesn't feel like something quite small, that feels like something massive. Congrats on the achievement, incredible effort.

Too right on the volunteers, events like this can't take place without them.

Its amazing to see the elites, especially the locals with the international caliber of Dan, Ruth, Caitlin etc... We were out at Boyes Beach on Lake Okareka to watch the lead men and women come through. That was after the Millar Rd aid station so I'm guessing it must have been ~75km in. They all came through there at sub 4:00min/km pace which is incredible. I certainly got short of breath when I chased Beth Mckenzie down to get her back on course when she made a wrong turn and started heading towards the car park.

Western States is going to be an absolute cracker this year with the talent of people looking to take the start line.

Yep, their pace for 100km is faster than my flat out 5km pace.  Even Sam winning the Miler was averaging 5min something pace.  They are phenomenally quick.

I was fully in power hike mode by the time I came through there around 10:30pm.  Pretty happy with pulling 9:30/km walking on the flat and downhills for the second half though.

Looks like a book I would enjoy. Have you read The Snows of Yesteryear by Gregor von Rezzori?
