The Guardian - Sad face: New Zealander takes clown to redundancy meeting

Fri 13 Sep 2019

If you think emotional support animals have got out of control, prepare yourself for news of an emotional support clown.

An Auckland advertising copywriter brought a clown to his redundancy meeting, as first reported in the New Zealand Herald on Friday.

New Zealand legally requires employers to allow workers the option of bringing a support person to serious disciplinary meetings, usually relating to an employee’s prospective dismissal.

After FCB New Zealand lost a significant client and began layoffs, Josh Thompson, who had reportedly been with the company for five months, received an ominous email from his bosses that read: “Bad news. We’re having a meeting to discuss your role.”

Faced with the task of securing an appropriate support person for the potentially tense meeting, Thompson, an aspiring comedian, said: “I thought it’s best to bring in a professional, and so I paid $200 and hired a clown.”

The clown, who Thompson refers to as “Joe”, crafted balloon animals throughout the meeting, including a poodle. His antics were squeaky, and Thompson’s bosses had to request he quieten down several times.

“It’s further understood,” reported the Herald, “that the clown mimed crying when the redundancy paperwork was handed over.” ...

Thompson told Magic Talk radio: “I mean, I did get fired, but apart from that it was all smooth running.”

Fortunately, Thompson will not be out of work for long. The Australian ad agency DDB confirmed Thompson will start a new role in its office next week.

You can use it as de-icer (in strong winters) or window cleaner for your car as well. :-)

I am not really a morning person. Some people bound forth, loins girded and ready to hit the corporate treadmill in their cube existence. Me...not so much. Absent a reasonable excuse (such as a plane to catch or a house fire to escape) my mornings are as silent as possible, slow burning and very peaceful.

One essential item of course is coffee. My preferred poison is 3 Nespresso espressos with foamed milk. That is the only coffee I drink all day - it's tea after that. I like the coffee to last a while - at least 30 minutes - as I come to. To keep it hot, I had some nice twin wall glass mugs. Great to drink from but...not so robust. One cracked and had water in between the layers and then the other toppled over in the sink and broke.

I set off to find a twin walled mug that wouldn't crack, break, split etc and was good enough quality to last.

Enter the Sttoke Cup, born in Melbourne. Food grade stainless steel twin walled, lined with German ceramic non-stick. Keeps coffee hot for 3 hours (with the lid, I assume, which I do not bother with at home) and cold for 6. Easily washed (not in dishwasher) the non-stick ceramic cleans up instantly. It adds no odour, no taste or anything of that sort.

Just a great cup for those who like that kind of thing - it makes me smile every morning!

(Seriously - they are great cups. Try one.)

A mere bagatelle. 30 minutes of chargeable time to a man of your standing, surely?

spending extra for quality is often repaid with longevity and pleasure, of course price does not always equal quality.

Does the ceramic coating add anything more than "just like a normal coffee mug feel"? It's not as if twin wall stainless is a new thing. If you aren't that fussy there's a $6 450ml stainless travel mug at Countdown.

I bought an item off a dealer on Trademe recently.
It's one of those aluminium bathroom shelf things.

The packaging says:

Multifunctional Hutch Defends Add-on.

Yes it does. It is a German water based ceramic non-stick called Greblon that is also used in cookware. It is (obvs) non-stick so easy to clean, adds no taste or odour, has heat retaining qualities and is very very had to scratch.

Very true. I think in this instance, it will.
