Here is a Saudi cleric who maintains that women are too stupid to drive. This makes me wonder if there is a maximum IQ for Saudi clerics? Maybe they have to demonstrate an inability to walk and preach at the same time? Maybe they have to think Dumb and  Dumber II is a funny film? Maybe they think women bleed from their eyes?

How many Saudi clerics does it take to pass an IQ test? All of them, but only if their wives tell them the answers.

I was talking to a lady (ex-irish catholic) now living in Saudi and I knew a Kiwi woman who converted to Islam, uprooted her family here and moved to Middle East and now she is living in Saudi (economy lecturer with PhD). They seemed not to be bothered with the driving thing as big as we made it out. Apparently the women over there is highly educated and you need good qualification to be able to compete among them - women education in Saudi.

On the other hand Muslim women elsewhere drives everywhere they want. Then you see the like of some Jewish sect in the west who banned their women from driving also - https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/29/nicky-morgan-orthodox-jewish-women-driver-ban-belz-london

A few points

1. I think the OP has issue with the cleric(s) not the driving itself

2. Of course they will appear to not have an issue with it. Coz those with issues are all sent to brainwashing, gentle whippings, locked up in house arrest, etc. But you could well be right - it's like NZers can't get American Netflix - most Kiwis are ok with it, Chinese people can't get the Facebook/VPN, North Koreans can't get internet, etc. Most normal people accept that the "standard" way of life is just fine, bar a few rebels who want to change things. I'm just saying you have to ask them anonymously to know. I don't claim to know.

I call this bull, the two I know are the expats who grew up in the west, but now living in Saudi. If anything, one of them was actually excited given that she can now ask her husband to chauffeur her anywhere she want. Oh yeah, and she is making way more money teaching over there than what she can earn here.

You could well be right! My wife hates driving when I'm in the car! But when I'm not in the car I don't want to hire some good looking man to drive her around! OTOH, if you were a woman, and hates the stress of driving around, a mandatory hunk driving you around, I get your point! If only it were the other way round, I would move to Saudi!

The clerics have a point, women probably won't be able to do this

The key thing in the article

A cleric in Saudi Arabia has been banned from preaching after causing uproar online by suggesting women are too stupid to drive.

Clearly the Saudi public and administration agree with you. Projecting this attitude onto all Saudi clerics is unfair.

Wow my apologies to them. One must do research before blindly commenting!

So as of yesterday suddenly they can drive!

So my guess is the cleric was probably responding to the King's decree allowing women to drive, while we were attacking them for that, blindly so!

I'm touched. I was expecting the typical British version - half a dozen people in black, looking miserable standing by an open grave in the drizzle, before repairing to a local hostelry to lie through their teeth about how much they liked me...!

"To Bob who wanted to be remembered in my will: hello, Bob!"

Look, Allah has said women should not drive. You heretics and apostates had just jolly well better shut up and agree, or I will send the Moral Police round to arrest you for your stoning next Thursday week. So there.

At the risk of being a pedant, they will be allowed to drive. Whether they can or not remains to be seen...!

And in true Presidential pissing-contest style, I'll one-up your pedantry. Women were already allowed to drive in Saudi, it's just that they needed a guardian's supervision

As per @Batman's link

Following the decree, women will no longer need permission from a legal guardian to get a licence and will not need a guardian in the car when they drive, said the new Saudi ambassador to Washington DC, Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.

I think he more had this particular can of worms in mind...
