Nope. Looks like the first one was called that and the next is named subtly differently.
That's not confusing at all.

The first King's Man movie was funny and original and interesting if slightly OTT. The second was vile, extremely unfunny bar maybe 2-3 moments, and stupidly OTT for no benefit. I am not sure what to make of the third, but if it's anything like the second, I will be skipping it.

[quote - FineWine:

Agree. Very disappointing. The second was way too all American as if "made for". This latest one looks more English so, in theory, should be way better and even equivalent to the first.

Aaaahh. I think you people are talking about 'Kingsman'. Or is it another movie?

Yes we were praising the 1st movie in the franchise: Kingsman: The Secret Service

and slagging off the 2nd movie in the franchise: Kingsman: The Golden Circle

whilst I in prior post, just above, mentioned the 3rd movie in the franchise: The King's Man

iMac 27" [14.2] (late 2013), Airport Time Capsule 5th gen, iPhone13 x 2, iPad6, iPad Mini5, Spark Smart Modem 1st Gen

Panasonic TV Viera TH-L50E6Z (1080p), Panasonic Blu-ray PVR DMR-BWT835, Yamaha AVR RX-V1085 [6.1 Surround Speaker System], Apple TV 4k 64Gb (2nd gen), Apple HomePod mini

Kia Sportage Urban EX (2019), Suzuki Swift SR7 (2011)

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.

Not to be confused with All The King's Men starring Sean Penn from 2006.

Tenet 7.5/10 DVD

I'm going to have to watch this latest effort from Christopher Nolan several more times. The plot is challenging to say the least with a time travelling James Bond type character trying to save the whole of existence from being erased (I think).

Great action scenes and some amazing special effects though.

I watched two movies over the weekend - both very different.

  • Jungle Cruise (Disney +)

    • Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, Emily Blunt and Jack Whitehall are in 1930's Brazil searching for the elixir of youth (for science). They come across menacing animals, ferocious natives and conniving and crooked colonialists, while also fighting off Ze Germans to get the ultimate prize.
    • It's a swashbuckling romp in "Pirates of the Caribbean" style and I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was - a family-friendly action adventure movie that really doesn't try to take itself seriously at all.
    • The sets are amazing
    • It has a nostalgic feel to it - like a movie shot in the 1950's or 1960's
    • Suspend your belief - physics aren't important in a movie like this

  • The Suicide Squad (Apple TV)

    • Not quite a reboot, not quite a sequel and ultimately, completely different to the other one that came out a while ago, but with some of the same actors/characters.
    • Violent, over the top and quite gruesome at times
    • Somewhat funny - typical from James Gunn)
    • a good soundtrack (as you'd expect from any James Gunn movie)
    • Set up at the end for a possible sequel? Maybe...maybe not
    • I thoroughly enjoyed it for completely different reasons to the previously mentioned movie. My wife lasted 10 min and gave up on it. She's not into violent, gory movies. My 16yo loved it.
    • The main antagonists don't show up until quite late in the movie which is a bit different
    • Sebastian steals the show
    • It's LONG...

Ratings:

Jungle Cruise - 8/10

The Suicide Squad - 7/10

Many bad things have been said about the Nazis but in their favour, they have provided excellent material to Hollywood and will continue to do so for many years.

I think their main asset is the goose stepping.

Sounds like good lockdown fare but I'm happy to delay until November's lockdown (joke - touch wood) to watch so as to avoid paying the $40 'premiere' premium for early access!

Movies we've enjoyed recently include:

  • Nomadland (Disney+)

    • Slow (in a good way) and poignant, but I imagine YMMV quite a bit on this depending on the types of films you enjoy.
  • Boy (Netflix)

    • Seen it before, of course, but watched it this time with the kids (10, 13) both of whom enjoyed it; interesting to watch after having seen Jojo Rabbit (Disney+) a few weeks back, given that it demonstrates many examples of his distinct film-making style.
  • Luca (Disney+)

    • I thought this was really charming, and TBH enjoyed it a lot more than Soul. A great choice for family viewing.

Stillwater.

A long and at times confusingly ill-explained film with some nice moments. Worth it for the location work in France, which brought back many holiday memories.
