Go see it !

Do you have to like the first one to enjoy it?  I've seen it but I hate it...

There are nods to the first movie and fan service. But since you’re not a fan they won’t mean anything.

It will stand alone as a military action movie but I would suggest it’s not worth going out of your way to see it at the cinema if you ‘hated’ the first one.

All films are subjective what is one mans trash is another mans treasure.

Example the movie Jumper, Not rated very well but I loved it. 9/10 for me.

I do want to go see Top Gun Maverick but at a fully kitted out cinema.

Took the family to see Top Gun: Maverick at the cinema.

First time since Pre-Pandemic that I have seen a completely full cinema.

First time in a long time that there's been applause and cheering at the end of the movie.

I am a Top Gun fan - let's put that out there. When I told my kids (16 + 17) that they needed to brush up on the original, they both rolled their eyes. Then I started walking around the house saying things like, "We're going ballistic, Mav", and "I feel the need. The need for speed" etc. They caved and watched the original (separately in their bedrooms on their laptops). Bloody teenagers.

Needless to say, I was excited to be seeing this one. I'd seen the early reviews, read the various stories about the production, familiarised myself with the back-story on the new leading lady etc.

Two things, I guess need saying:

  • If you didn't like the first one, you're unlikely to like this one.
  • If you're a fan of the first one - you'll be pleased.

Miles Teller was inspired casting. Goose was right there with us the whole way.

It's been a long time coming, but as a fan of the original, who grew up quoting lines and having somewhat of an obsession with F-14 Tomcats as a result of the film, I am a happy camper.

Even the kids said that was epic.

10/10

Watched Gunpowder Milkshake on Neon yesterday.

It's...hard to define how I felt about it.

How would I describe it? Probably as a clone of John Wick, but with a female lead instead.

It's not terrible. It's just not great. It's certainly got a feeling of being a budget John Wick. It's violent, has moments where they attempt comedic lightness and sometimes it's quite good. Then it's not.

The fight choreography as not amazing. The cast is stellar - and yet doesn't shine. The cinematography is OK. The sets are pretty good. The plot is familiar.

I'd probably rate it 6/10 - just above completely average.

Watched Lost City to keep the partner happy. I'll give it a 5.5/10, I mean I did laugh once or twice. Brad Pitt was great in it.

Watched a couple of movies over the weekend, but have already forgotten what they were - they were on Sky Movies (got it free for a week as a "reward").

One was a dreary thing about...something, while the other was a comedy which wasn't funny.

Also rewatched The Expendables. Great homage to the 80's action flick. Total rubbish! Loved it.

La Penguina wanted to see the latest dino movie, so we went on the weekend.

God, what a yawn. A barely coherent plot serves to splice together the scenes, each of which features the good guys 'just' escaping, again, the clutches of death in one form or another.

And it's overloaded with shoddy CGI. I didn't believe for a second those dinosaurs were real.

Thank god it's the last one.

3/10

No Time To Die - DVD - 7/10

Last outing for Daniel Craig as Bond had an odd atmosphere to it, bit like a closing down sale. Action as good as ever but too long by 30 minutes.

He'll be a hard act to follow.

the problem is the lead actress she just cant do action scenes , they just look so bad when she fights . It took me right out of the movie and i just ended up laughing at them.  i would give it 5/10. It just never takes off into a good action film.

Karen Gillan.

She's very good in Guardians of the Galaxy. She plays the blue one. Nebula.

She also wasn't too bad in the new reboots of Jumanji.

This film however just didn't work for her (or me)

Top Gun Maverick 5/5

Of course I was going to see this. I went to a fundraiser viewing for my daughter’s hockey team and the response from people was really positive. Even a 5/5 from my work colleague who does not like Tom Cruise and 4.5/5 from my Marvel fanatic colleague.

They certainly got it right. Yes I found some parts too cheesy yet the story progression, nods to original, suspense and thrill were all excellent with plenty of people commenting on how tense they got watching it. So pleased it is a success and looking forward to seeing this a lot more times yet. Wish I could see it in an Atmos theatre but how do you find which theatres have Atmos in Auckland? New Lynn Titan XC looks like it does but it is not playing in that theatre now.

Here is an excellent interview with a Top Gun instructor that gives a great insite to what they got right in the movie. Warning spoilers.

Top Gun - Maverick on Imax.

Wow. I mean, seriously. WOW. I can't recall enjoying a movie more in a very long time. It is a rare thing for a sequel to stand up to the original, but in my opinion, this movie is close to the gold standard on how you would have done this sequel.

The special effects, sound, everything, was amazing.

A lot of people don't like Tom Cruise, but I think he is a fantastic actor. With the exception of 2-3 bits of dialogue which were a little painful, the whole thing was just totally enjoyable.

10/10 from me.

For those that watched Top Gun: Maverick

Is there a clip available where they mention the location of the nuclear bunker?
