Matilda The Musical 5/10

Mum says I'm a good case for population control.

A random YouTube recommendation led me to a video of Tim Minchin talking about the music he wrote for the Matilda stage show. I was unaware of his involvement, and I may have actually seen the show had I known. I enjoy his humour and style of music, which without being an expert on the subject, I would describe as loosely structured. He's a great story teller. Sadly, the movie was a bit of a miss for me. I understand from the books (which I haven't read), Hortensia should have played a bigger role, but as-is, I can't see what all the fuss is about with her featured in literally hundreds of YouTube shorts. Matilda's relationship with Miss Honey was poorly developed, making the whole living situation at the end seem nonsensical. She seemed to be closer to the lady who drives the book bus.

I also spent a good 20 minutes trying to work out who Matilda (Alisha Weir) reminded me of, which I admit, I found a bit distracting.

M3GAN 6/10

Was that a PDL 600 series light switch? Good luck fixing a race condition in literally a minute.

Technical criticism aside (there is plenty more than the race condition comment), I found this to be somewhat enjoyable. A bit slow getting started, I would've liked to see a higher body count and more creative killings. The social worker/therapist should've been on the hit list. I would've gone much darker with the motivations of the boy in the woods, especially give he appears older, and kept the ear stretching to realistic levels. The sub-plot of the assistant leaking company data also could've gone further. Cady should've also been a suspect in the killings, which while predictable (Child's Play did this), is much more logical than jumping straight to the conclusion that an AI robot must be the killer. No memorable quotes... "Get away from her, you b...".

Overall, I felt there were missed opportunities here.

We Have A Ghost - Netflix - 7/10

Finding a ghost named Ernest haunting their new home turns Kevin's family into overnight social media sensations. But when Kevin and Ernest investigate the mystery of Ernest's past, they become a target of the CIA.

Thoroughly enjoyed this; Light Comedy - Thriller - Mystery - Family. Maybe a tad long 2hr 6 min. Plus there were a couple of loose ends. But overall it was entertaining.

A Very English Scandal - 7/10 - Prime Video

British Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe is accused of conspiracy to murder his gay ex-lover and forced to stand trial in 1979.

And a very English upper class comedy which only the Brit's can do. Even though The Sexual Offences Act was past in 1967 they, the upper class, still brushed it all under the carpet or in the closet, especially if they were politicians. "Just not done old bean" and this short 3 one hour episodes demonstrates that very well. Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw give very good performances and ably support by Alex Jennings.

Now this looks interesting:

The Popes Exorcist - release 6th April in theatres

Russell Crowe Portrayal of a real-life figure Father Gabriele Amorth, a priest who acted as chief exorcist of the Vatican and who performed more than 100,000 exorcisms in his lifetime. (He passed away in 2016 at the age of 91.) Amorth wrote two memoirs -- An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories -- and detailed his experiences battling Satan and demons that had clutched people in their evil.

That looks entertaining. I look forward to it. Sadly the 'true story' and religious aspect will no doubt spawn a bunch of dangerous and harmful diy exorcisms and inspire some new 'professionals'. Always verify your exorcist is a member of the International Association of Exorcists.

I watched The Colony last night, can't recommend it all. It mainly seems to be a mish-mash of Children Of Men, Mad Max, Waterworld and Elysium. Right from the start when the opening titles talk of the ruling classes moving to another planet then sending people back 2 generations later, they've either ignored or are unaware of the fact the name they mention is a star, not a planet, and is almost 2000 light years from earth. There must've been some amazing propulsion and communications systems in play! I won't give anything else away except to say the plot line is entirely predictable.

We watched The Estate on Prime Video last night.

Quite entertaining. Predictable, but amusing.

Starred Toni Collette, Anna Faris, David Duchovny (played this role very well) and Kathleen Turner, amongst others.

From IMDB: Two sisters attempt to win over their terminally ill, difficult-to-please Aunt in hopes of becoming the beneficiaries of her wealthy estate, only to find the rest of their greedy family members have the same idea.

Acquired a few Carry On blurays recently. Much better than your modern rubbish.

Luther: The Fallen Sun. Netflix

I am a big Luther fan so i was a bit worried that they would just be cashing in on the name , it may not be as good as some of the series but it is still one of the better thrillers i have seen in a while. mind you it ends up being a Andy Serkis film as he is that creepy as the villain. It is worth watching the film even if you're not a Luther fan, just to watch him. 8/10

I thought the Luther seasons with Ruth Wilson in were excellent but as with a lot of series the first season was the best with a general decline after that.

I wasn't impressed with the film. A lot of the plot, especially the very contrived murder scenes, was highly implausable and Andy Serkis was just not dominating enough to have achieved what he was supposed to have done.

I'd give it a 5.

Just watched The Accountant from 2016.  Ben Afflick is a high functioning autistic and a math savant, who handles the books for bad people.  The kicker is that his dad was a hard arse military officer who didn't go for the touchy feely approach to handling Ben's character, or his brother who is also autistic — but in not quite the same way.  So, he drives the boys super hard so they can deal with the bullying etc. they will suffer because they are different.  As you can imagine, Ben grows up to become a cross between the Rain Man and Bob Lee Swagger.

[TINY SPOILER]

The twist towards the end is not hard to see coming.

[SUMMERY]

I liked the movie so much I immediately hit IMDB to see if the is a sequel.  Apparently, a sequel is in development with most of the same characters.

I also watched Lucy from 2014 because I have seen so much of it in YouTube clips, so I decided to string them together.  Not as good as The Accountant, but still enjoyable.

Changeling - DVD - 7.5/10

Clint Eastwood directs and Angelina Jolie stars in a drama set in Loas Angeles in the 1920's based on a true story. A child goes missing and the LA police department, anxious for some good publicity, pressure the mother to accept that the child they have found is hers when it is not.

Engaging story and a good performance from AJ makes for a very pleasant couple of hours.

I saw about half of this and I concur. Entertaining but, rude. So many F words and a trouser snake too.

An unrated edition has just been released, which restores what was cut/changed in order to get it's theatrical PG-13 rating. Apparently more gore in the kills, including a bloodier and less comical ear biting. But I doubt the amped up blood will significantly change the tone of the movie, which I think is meant to be relatively stupid fun rather than real horror.
