TLD:

Just watched The Accountant from 2016.  Ben Afflick is a high functioning autistic and a math savant, who handles the books for bad people.  The kicker is that his dad was a hard arse military officer who didn't go for the touchy feely approach to handling Ben's character, or his brother who is also autistic — but in not quite the same way.  So, he drives the boys super hard so they can deal with the bullying etc. they will suffer because they are different.  As you can imagine, Ben grows up to become a cross between the Rain Man and Bob Lee Swagger.

[TINY SPOILER]

The twist towards the end is not hard to see coming.

[SUMMERY]

I liked the movie so much I immediately hit IMDB to see if the is a sequel.  Apparently, a sequel is in development with most of the same characters.

I also watched Lucy from 2014 because I have seen so much of it in YouTube clips, so I decided to string them together.  Not as good as The Accountant, but still enjoyable.

I thought The Accountant was pretty good, but I felt that Affleck's character seemed to get less and less autistic as the movie progressed and he became more of a traditional "action movie guy" which was a shame.

I just thought Lucy was bad. The concept was interesting, but there were too many plot issues that took me out of the movie. I think it got an above average reception, so I might be in the minority on this. But no matter what budget he has to play with, Luc Besson has never been able to top Leon: The Professional in my book.

Primal Fear Netflix 7.5/10

Richard Gere and Edward Norton (his first film role) star in a court room drama. One of Gere's best performances and Norton won several accolades for his performance.

Well worth a watch.

Cocaine Bear - Based (incredibly loosely) on a true story. It had some good moments, but they could have done so much more with such a stupidly fun concept. 5/10

Watched 'Everything Everywhere All At Once.'

A 'B' movie at best. Completely incomprehensible how this got so much acclaim and so many awards. Best Picture ?! This is in the same league as The Godfather? FFS.

Yay, found one other person on this earth who saw it as I did, a ridiculous mess.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

In The Heart Of The Sea - DVD - 8/10

Excellent seafaring drama directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth telling the real story behind Moby Dick.

Ron Howard does this type of movie really well and Hemsworth is perfect as the ships First Mate.

It's biggest problem for me was that it outstayed it's welcome. I needed to end 20min earlier than it did.

The Usual Suspects - DVD - 8/10

Not dated at all, still brilliant film making.

Had a choice of going to see Shazam 2 or an advance screening of Dungeons and Dragons

Feeling a bit worn out from superhero fatigue, and looking at the ratings for each movie, I opted for the latter.

The movie is solid and a worthwhile timewaster. It's not a classic by any means but I hope it does well to bring out some sequels (not necessarily with the same cast/characters - there's a whole DnD whole to explore). I'm not a DnD player but my BIL is and he chuckled at a lot of references but you don't need to know anything about dnd to enjoy the movie.

It's fun, reasonably paced, and a good old fashioned adventure.

I've read comparisons that this is the fantasy version of Guardians of the Galaxy and it's a fairly apt description. This is what I wish Thor love and thunder should have been instead of the let down that was.

I actually wanted to see John Wick 4 but not disappointed I saw this instead - JW4 can wait until next week.

Red Book - Netflix - 6/10

Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson in an action comedy. Some chuckles but it missed the mark most of the time.

The Equalizer - Netflix - 7/10

Denzil Washington stars in this pretty one dimensional blood fest. Mildly entertaining in the way all these ultra violence movies are.

John Wick - Netflix - 7/10

See above but substitute Keanu Reeves for Denzil Washington

Ava - Netflix - 8/10

Jessica Chastain stars in another action thriller as a super assassin (aren't they always) again with plenty of ultra violence but I actually preferred it to the two above.

It had pretty poor reviews though so maybe I'm an outlier.

The Intruder - Netflix - 7/10

Denis Quaid stars in a slightly different home invasion movie in which he sells a house but never really relinquishes it to the new owners.

Quad is pretty reasonable as the unhinged house seller (quite a few nods to Jack Nicholson in The Shining) but the storyline is predictable.

The Old Guard - Netflix - 7.5/10

Another super hero movie this time with Charlize Theron starring as the leader of a small gang of immortals who keep us humans on the right path by saving people who go on to do good things.

The evil big pharma CEO tries to capture them to find out their secret.

Again predictable but at least if you fall asleep for a while in the middle you don't miss much.

Finally watched Wakanda Forever.

What a disappointment. Give it 5/10 at best.

Yeah I'd agree with that.  This phase of Marvel films has mostly been a disappointment to me, barring a couple of standouts and the streaming shows were pretty good IMO
