THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (2017) 4K Ultra HD Disc 9/10

Musicals; Love 'em or hate 'em. Personally I love 'em, and in my opinion this is one of the best modern musicals out there.

Hugh Jackman shows his versatility, by going from his very different role in Wolverine to P. T. Barnham, (who went on to create the Barnham & Bailey and Ringling Bros. circus') with his show full of human misfits and oddities. Songs such as "A Million Dreams", "This Is Me" and the wonderful "Never Enough" had me totally in their grasp.

The highlight of the film for me is when Barnham introduces "The Swedish Nightingale" Jenny Lind played by a stunning Rebecca Ferguson as she goes into her rendition of "Never Enough" (actually sung by Loren Allred). I was spellbound throughout the song, and I rewound it twice so that I could enjoy it again.

The film is based loosely on Barnham's family life and his early years in show biz, and it entertained me throughout, as the music and dancing kept on coming. Its a "feel good" film, with a memorable cast.

I've never really been impressed by Hugh Jackman as an actor (see Reminiscence as an example) but he's a really likeable bloke and he is spectacularly good as The Greatest Showman and in Les Mis.

My favourite scene in Greatest Showman is the opening which really sets the high energy tone for the rest of the movie.

Sound of Freedom - Cinema - 9/10

The incredible true story of a former government agent turned vigilante who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hundreds of children from sex traffickers.

Hard film to watch, from the perspective of the subject material; but a film that should be watched by large numbers of people, in order to draw awareness to the subject material...

The Meg - The utter lack of even trying to even be slightly scientifically accurate in regards to the pressures involved at the some of the depths involved annoyed the bejesus out of me (as in what sort of submersible or equipment can operate at that depth etc). I'd imagine the rest is pretty scientifically inaccurate as well. But if you can get past that it was some alright dumb fun. 5.5/10

The Meg 2 - Boy oh boy. If the first one was dumb, then this one has a traumatic brain injury. 2.5/10

Ha ha. We watched The Meg 2 last night.

It really is as bad as the ads make it out to be.

I loved it. 3/10

Oppenheimer. Very long, quite involved, well-acted (some excellent performances!). I enjoyed it, but found some of the speech hard to hear despite some parts of the movie being VERY loud!

If anyone else who watched the movie understood the sheets thing, could you PM me please?

Many people have complained of not being able to hear dialogue in some scenes in several of Christopher Nolan's films. I don't know why he insists on doing this. As I don't go to cinemas any more (for various reasons), I do have the advantage of being able to turn on the subtitles when watching at home. Its not something I like to do, but does help when watching said scenes. Nolan also refuses to use Atmos on his soundtracks. Just seems a little bizarre to me 🙄

Because apparently he doesn't like getting the actors back to do ADR in the studio, so you're left with the raw sound from the day of shooting, or nothing.

Browsing the web, I read that BARBIE will surpass THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE as the highest worldwide Box-Office hit of 2023, and also put it in 15th place on the All-Time list.

When I first read that they were making a Barbie movie, I rolled my eyes and thought "that'll be another box-office bomb for Warner Bros." What is it with this film? anyone here seen it at cinemas?. The pre-release hype and the brilliant Barbenheimer joint advertising campaign must have really piqued the interest of movie fans as OPPENHEIMER has done really well too (inching towards $US800 Million).

It will be released digitally in September, so I'll be able to have a watch for myself.

The Woman King. Neon

Violent, based on a true story (so I believe) and well acted, shot and scripted.

It's a little predictable at times.

I'd like to know what happened to the nice chap from Brazil.

Viola Davis must've worked some long hours in the gym to get into that kind of shape - she is quite a physical spectacle in this movie.

Overall, it was good but not great. 7/10

Or really crap voice work in the case of Tom Hardy in the Dark Knight Rises.

It certainly was a stylistic choice.  I'd argue the wrong one...

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (2022) 4K Ultra HD Disc 7/10

After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove that he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

When my kids were at school we owned just about every game console on the market at one time or another. I remember Sonic the Hedgehog on one of the Sega consoles, and many an hour was spent collecting rings and gems with my boys; so when I saw this movie selling for a mere $15 in the last JB Hi-Fi NZ 20% off sale, I decided to grab it, and I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Casting Jim Carey as Dr Robotnik was a master stroke. The role is perfect for Carey's crazy, over the top acting style and to me, he was the star of the show here. The Dolby Vision video (9/10) and the Dolby Atmos (10/10) audio made for an enjoyable Home Cinema experience. There were some good use of the overhead speakers, which isn't always noticeable on some other discs. The introduction of Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) and Tails (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) were excellent additions. The runtime of two hours was a little long, and I thought that maybe 90 to 100 minutes would have been long enough

Clearly, a lot of thought and planning went into the script, and the use of many items that featured in the games were well presented. It seems that there are plans for a third film in this franchise, and if the 4K Ultra HD ever drops to $15, I may buy it.

After test screenings Hardy had to re-record his dialogue as apparently it was even less intelligible than it was in the final film.

It would have been nice not to have done it the afternoon before the film was released but I guess that’s how it goes (I know it wasn’t but it feels like it).

Dune part 2 release has been delayed.

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-66615759

"Warner Bros has delayed the planned November release of its big-budget Dune sequel until March 2024. A spokesperson said the movie would not be released whilst the Hollywood actors' strike was ongoing because its stars cannot promote the movie."

He is a taste:

iMac 27" [14.2] (late 2013), Airport Time Capsule 5th gen, iPhone13 x 2, iPad6, iPad Mini5, Spark Smart Modem 1st Gen

Panasonic TV Viera TH-L50E6Z (1080p), Panasonic Blu-ray PVR DMR-BWT835, Yamaha AVR RX-V1085 [6.1 Surround Speaker System], Apple TV 4k 64Gb (2nd gen), Apple HomePod mini

Kia Sportage Urban EX (2019), Suzuki Swift SR7 (2011)

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.

It's a real shame, Dune was top of my list for seeing in IMAX this year. Also a bit more of a snub considering it's only that the actors aren't available to promote the movie (implying that production is completed). Although, I have started to enjoy watching interviews more as I've gotten older.

Have complete respect for the SAG-AFTRA strikes, everyone needs to be paid properly.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. What a disappointment. Max at 5/10.
