OPPENHEIMER (2023)4K Ultra HD Disc • Movie (10/10) • 4K HDR (10/10) • DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (10/10) •

I've been waiting a long time to get my hands on this disc and it arrived on release day in nice SteelBook packaging. I don't go to the cinema anymore, I much prefer to watch films in my home environment.

I'm not going to talk about the film itself, I'm sure most of you have already seen it and formed your own opinions; I would like to share my thoughts on the 4K Ultra HD disc.

Simply put; this must be the best 4K Ultra HD disc of 2023. A mixed aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and 1.78:1 gives the viewer an excellent picture quality in both the colour and black and white scenes. HDR gives the colour scenes a real boost and the whole thing is a joy to behold.

Now, I want to talk about the audio on this thing. Who needs Dolby Atmos when the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is this good. Hold on to your armchairs 'cos the LFE channel is gonna shake your foundations. Deep rich bass helped along by my subwoofer, kept rumbling throughout the whole of the three hours run time and I'm looking forward to experiencing it again very soon.

I'm so glad that I have finally got to see this masterpiece; it must be favoured for an almost clean sweep at next years Academy Awards, with Cillian Murphy a shoo-in for best male actor.

GRAN TURISMO (2023) • 4K Ultra HD Disc • Movie (9/10) • 4K Dolby Vision (9/10) • Dolby Atmos (10/10)

Gran Turismo is based on the unbelievable true story of a team of unlikely underdogs – a struggling working-class gamer (Archie Madekwe), a failed former race car driver (David Harbour), and an idealistic motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom). Together, they risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world. Gran Turismo is an inspiring, thrilling, and action-packed story that proves that nothing is impossible when you’re fueled from within.

Man, I'm getting spoiled lately. What with Oppenheimer yesterday and Gran Turismo today its been a most enjoyable two days of movie watching.

When I first heard that Sony were going to release a film based on their incredibly successful video game franchise, I immediately thought "not another attempt to make a film from a game" of which the end product is usually a bit of a let down. Well, Gran Turismo bucks the trend and what we have here is an excellent race car movie filled with drama, excitement, a bit of cheese and some amazing racing footage. Based on the unlikely true story of  Jann Mardenborough; a Welshman who loved playing video racing games, which led to him getting an opportunity to try his skills at the real thing, driving for Nissan.

David Harbour is the star of the show here. He puts in a great performance as Jann's driving coach; a slightly different role to when I last saw him playing Santa Claus in Violent Night 😁. Great visuals and an awesome soundtrack complete a great package. When the team are racing the Le Mans 24 Hour race, Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" is pounding out, and creating a real adrenalin rush for the viewer.

One of the most underrated films of 2023, Gran Turismo is a true feel good movie and lots of fun. Now I'm off to fire up my Playstation 5; Gran Turismo 7 is already loaded πŸ˜€

The Killer (Netflix)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1136617/

A very slick production following a hired killer when things don't go to plan.

Beautifully shot, great acting, and the narration was even quite well done although borderline too much.  Took about 20 minutes before things started happening (I was just about to pull the pin) but then managed to hold my attention and weave a good story despite being just a little bit dull.  Michael Fassbender carried the show and was brilliant.  Very slick production. Fight scenes were well done, realistic, and not for the squeamish.

6/10

Oppenheimer - Blu-Ray UHD - 9/10

This film needs to be watched more than once. A complex story with a large group of characters told brilliantly by Christopher Nolan.

UHD playback is immaculate and a great soundtrack.

Three hours passed very quickly.

Lucy - Blu-Ray UHD - 7.5/10

Luc Besson films are ideal for UHD, exuding color throughout, and this one is no different. The story is average but the action is pretty good and Scarlet Johannsen does a good job.

Alone We Fight - DVD

This is a war movie set in the closing stages of WWII. An American unit is defending a flank in the forests on the border of Belgium / Germany.

2/10

The script is rubbish - soldiers spend most of their time sitting round saying 'war is hell' and looking tired. When there is a little war action, it's 3 Americans against 3 Germans so there's no scale to it. The 'war' action looks like it's put on by some weekend re-enactors.

In the end, the good guys all end up shot and face down in the dirt which is frankly better than they deserve for this rubbish.

JURASSIC WORLD (2015)4K Ultra HD Disc • Movie (9/10) • 4K HDR (10/10) • DTS:X Master Audio (10/10)

Second Viewing.

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond.

The first (and best) film of the Jurassic World Trilogy is a real thrill ride. After the introductory 20 mins, the action hardly gives the viewer a break. Another superb 4K Ultra HD disc, accompanied by an absolutely stonking DTS:X audio track. I sat there giggling like a preschooler as the (almost) non-stop action unfolded before me. The Dinosaurs mostly looked realistic and the thundering echoes every time the T-Rex took a step was intense. Some of the special effects were obvious and didn't gel with the action, but overall I had no complaints. I have seen the two follow up movies in the Trilogy and I was disappointed that they couldn't build on what was an excellent first episode. Maybe they should have made this film a one-off. But Hollywood being Hollywood and the fact that this film was an unexpected Box-Office smash, taking over US$1.6 Billion worldwide, was always going to get a Trilogy.

I just looked up the worldwide Box-Office take for the two sequels. "Lost Kingdom" took over US$1.3 Billion and "Dominion" took just over US$1.0 Billion, so what do I know 😁

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: Dead Reckoning - Part One (2023) 4K Ultra HD Disc • Movie (9/10) • 4K Dolby Vision (9/10) • Dolby Atmos (10/10)

Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

Having read a few negative user reviews from around the web and in this thread, It was with some trepidation that I inserted my shiny new 4K disc into my players disc tray and settled into my armchair to watch.

I needn't have worried; The movie was very entertaining and the Atmos audio was on another level. A wonderful Home Cinema experience that you just don't get on an iPad, iPhone or similar. I know that Part 2 is to follow, so I expect that some of the plot holes will be filled in. Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise knows how to make great movies and excepting one or two titles I can think of; I have enjoyed almost all of the productions that he has been involved in, I have been a fan of the franchise from day one and I never tire of them. Fantastic action scenes are a given for the series and "Dead Reckoning" doesn't disappoint in that category. Cruise always surrounds himself with a great cast, whether its Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg or beauties like Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell and Vanessa Kirby the cast just seems to gel every time.

I'm a big fan of this franchise, and I'm looking forward to the other 'arf of this film.

I respect everyone's views on the film good or bad. I'm in the good category πŸ˜€

The Marvels - 8/10 (Silky Otter Cinemas, PN)

I went into this Marvel film knowing very little about it, which is unusual for me because I've generally been following closely all the major Marvel releases.  But I had detected a vague sense that people weren't really digging this film, and it certainly seemed to attract less hype than some other Marvel films.

My partner and I re-watched (for her, the first time) Captain Marvel the night before.  It reminded me how good it was, but coupled with the above-mentioned sense of unpopularity I went in expecting the film to be a little disappointing.  So it was nice to have that disappoint evaporate.  I found this to be a really fun and enjoyable film.

If you've watched Ms Marvel and Wandavision on Disney+ then you'll get a little more from this film, but it's not required watching.  I think it's a good example of how the films in the major MCU franchise can operate without requiring full investment into Marvel's massive content machine.

The story does a good job of weaving in the three main characters - Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Kahn.  There's an interconnectedness (literally) between all three, and they manage to explore the relationship of Carol to each of them, and develop all their characters.  The main storyline (involving the Kree) isn't as strong or as driving as some earlier films, but it really just serves to provide the connective tissue for the characters' development.

The action is fast and furious, as the trio learn about how using their powers causes them to swap in space, and it can be a bit overwhelming to begin with.  But I discovered if I just relaxed and lounged in the very comfortable recliner chairs in the cinema, and let the action wash over me, it was much more enjoyable.

Last, and definitely not least, there is an absolutely perfect scene involving the "cat" Goose.  For those who have watched Captain Marvel and know of Goose's true nature, then just know that they have found a way to make his contribution to the story even better.  Believe me when I say that in my four decades of movie watching I have never seen anything on film which has made me laugh harder (to the point of literal tears rolling down my cheeks).  There may have been only a few in the cinema, but everyone was howling with laughter, an absolutely joyous shared moment of delight (which is sorely needed when the current state of the world is considered).  The eye watering price of the movie tickets are entirely justified by this one scene alone.

Napoleon. 4/10

Very pretty but didnt learn anything other than he couldnt have kids with the missus.

I was frankly bored. Too much looking into the distance and saying little.

I read somewhere Scott didnt want to use too much CGI but those battles didnt look believable. Waterloo looked ridiculously small

Solders falling through ice in battle of Austerlitz but out of 15000 casualties maybe only 200-2000 fell through ice, and when ponds drained found less than 10 bodies..

Thor: Ragnarok. 7/10 I really enjoyed it. It's not the kind of movie I usually watch. Disney+ is expanding my taste. Taika Waititi all the way.
