Napoleon. 4/10

Very pretty but didnt learn anything other than he couldnt have kids with the missus.

I was frankly bored. Too much looking into the distance and saying little.

I read somewhere Scott didnt want to use too much CGI but those battles didnt look believable. Waterloo looked ridiculously small

Solders falling through ice in battle of Austerlitz but out of 15000 casualties maybe only 200-2000 fell through ice, and when ponds drained found less than 10 bodies..

I saw this recently and enjoyed it. I think if it is viewed as a historical documentary the viewer may miss the point.

Whats it about if not exactly what happened at such and such a battle on the somethingth of october, 18 hundred and something?

Spends a lot of time on his relationship with Josephine and his lust for power. As well as looking off into the distance, as mentioned !

Emily The Criminal  - Neon

I watched this slow-burner starring Aubrey Plaza without really knowing what it was about or what it was going to become.

It's a slowly told tale of a student-debt-ridden lady with some aspirations, which are ruined because she can't get a decent job as a result of a minor criminal record.

She takes up with a small-time crook, falling into more elaborate schemes and eventually foregoing her dreams of a normal life for one of criminal enterprise. It's not action packed and it's very character driven, but I found it hard to relate to her character, even though we are supposed to really feel for her. Her partner in crime is slightly more likeable and I found myself more drawn to his story than hers, but they never really dug too deeply into it.

6/10 - It's OK, but not great.

TRUE LIES (1994) My iTunes Library: 8/10

A fearless, globe-trotting, terrorist-battling secret agent has his life turned upside down when he discovers his wife might be having an affair with a used car salesman while terrorists smuggle nuclear war heads into the United States.

It's been a few years since I last watched this entertaining action movie. I had the DVD and sold it in anticipation of a Blu-ray release... which never came. So, when I read that it was going to be re-released in 4K with Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos on board, I purchased the Digital version Day 1 from iTunes yesterday. I enjoyed it more so than I did on DVD. The quality of the A/V upgrade is excellent and I thought how much fun the old Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies are. They never take themselves too seriously and there is always some good one-liners to enjoy. Sometimes a facial expression says a thousand words.

The late Bill Paxton almost steals the show as a car salesman who is trying to woo Arnie's bored wife, who is totally oblivious to what her husband really does for a living... he's a government agent. Lots of action, fun and erm...did I say action? ๐Ÿ˜.

If you have never seen this James Cameron action movie, give it a shot, I think you'll like it.

RESERVOIR DOGS (1992) • 4K Ultra HD Disc • 8/10

A botched robbery indicates a police informant, and the pressure mounts in the aftermath at a warehouse. Crime begets violence as the survivors – veteran Mr. White, newcomer Mr. Orange, psychopathic parolee Mr. Blonde, bickering weasel Mr. Pink and Nice Guy Eddie – unravel.

It's hard to imagine a film like Reservoir Dogs being made in today's PC world. There would likely be demonstrations and uproar on Social Media, but, the truth is... it's so entertaining (if a bit gory).

The main actor's in this Quentin Tarantino film regularly appear in his movies and they are all excellent every time I see them. The often funny (but gross) conversations between the various antagonists show off Tarantino's twisted humour and the gore is something I have come to expect in his films. Tarantino seems to have gone into semi retirement lately and some of you may think that is a good thing.

Enjoyable R18 fun, but definitely not for the squeamish.

Freelance - 1/10

Just don't.

Typical bodyguard storyline, EXTREMELY poor editing......

Being "lost" in middle of a jungle usually does not include powerlines running through the trees and buildings in the background.

Oh and just because it has a WWE member in it, does not mean theres any wrestling moves.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets - BluRay UHD - 8/10

An average storyline and fairly wooden acting but Luc Besson's movie in 4K is a feast for the eyeballs that keeps you enthralled when otherwise you might have wandered off to make a cup of tea.

I tried to watch it, but the acting put me off after 20mins.... gave up. Might watch a Chinese language version, and it may distract from the acting while I watch the subtitles.

Violent Night (Prime) -

If you're looking for a christmas movie with a difference, this could be it. Splashes of home alone and die hard mixed in with some hard core gruesome action. Interesting take on the Santa Claus character who starts the movie off as a drunk, but his back story is filled in throughout the movie. Not likely to be contending for any oscars, but its a worthwhile fun watch, definitely not a young family christmas movie.

7/10

The Place Beyond The Pines - DVD - 6/10

Early Ryan Gosling effort that I hadn't watched for a while doesn't seem as good as I remember. Some unlikely coincidences make up the story and it now feels like it rushes to the conclusion. Soundtrack is pretty good though.

I prefer his other early work in Drive.

Finally got around to Oppenheimer. Well made and well acted, but honestly I don't really see what the fuss was about. And considering it's essentially a drama with very few visual set pieces, I struggle to understand why Nolan insisted on filming so much of it on IMAX cameras. 6.5/10

The Creator. I enjoyed this one. Was like a cross between District 9 and Children of Men (although not as good as either). 7.5/10

Leave the World Behind - Netflix

Slow, creepy and feels like a film-festival film, with weird camera angles and jarring score.

Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and family take an inpromptu holiday and rent a house in the countryside near New York City, where they live.

Odd occurrences happen and then more stuff happens:

The owner of the ouse and his daughter arrive in the middle of the night, alarming the family. The mother (Julia Roberts) is none to pleased and is openly hostile. The father (Hawke) is less so.

Long story short, a series of weird events happen and there's a predictable "twist" at the end.

Kevin Bacon makes a cameo as a neighbour who is also a bit of a doomsday prepper and generally odd chap.

The ending left me cold. 6/10

im with you on the ending , if the director has to explain the ending then he has failed the audience that spent 2 1/2 hours watching it.

The ending was explained when the dad was talking about his student he's writing a foreward for, given his daughter is the emodiment of the concept of the student's thesis.

Hmmm...that flew straight over (through?) my head...not ideal, if a massive plot premise relies on the brief and seemingly inconsequential conversation between two characters.

THE ABYSS (1989) My iTunes Library 8.5/10.

A civilian oil rig crew is recruited to conduct a search and rescue effort when a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. One diver soon finds himself on a spectacular odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean’s surface where he confronts a mysterious force that has the power to change the world or destroy it.

Just released on 4K Dolby Vision Digital, I've been waiting for this; like True Lies The Abyss didn't get a Blu-ray release, so I bought this from iTunes Day 1. In my opinion, this film is one of James Cameron's best. I really enjoyed this viewing of a wonderful 4K transfer, not perfect, some scenes look stunning, others a little soft, but no complaints from me. I'm just glad to be given the opportunity to see the film again. A good mix of action, tension and romance (just a little) kept me glued to my TV screen. I've seen it maybe twice before, but I still couldn't remember the ending ๐Ÿ˜. Good performances from all of the cast, led by the always excellent Ed Harris, makes for an enjoyable two hours or so.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (Neon)

It's an unusual film and I wasn't expecting it to be what it was.

The premise is that a lonely scholar (Tilda Swinton) accidentally discovers and releases a Djinn (Idris Elba) whilst on a work trip to Istanbul.

It jumps all over the place in the retelling of both of their stories, but mainly it tells the tales of the Djinn and his long, long life and many loves in the Middle East over the course of some 3000 years.

It's well told, fabulously acted and drags you in, with lavish sets and costumes and a sense of fantasy.

It has an odd twist at the end and doesn't leave you disappointed or wanting to know more - it concludes nicely.

8/10
