Devils Advocate - DVD - 7.5/10

Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves star in a horror/drama about a country attorney who is picked up by a big New York firm only to gradually find out that they are not who they seem to be.

Excellent performance from Pacino who really dominates the whole film. One of Reeves better efforts.

One of those films with a crackerjack scene near the end that doesn't disappoint.

It’s a fun film. I disagree that Reeves was good, he’s horribly miscast IMO. He doesn’t really have the emotional range to really elevate the film.

Pacino is hilarious, he’s having a great time the whole film.

The scene in Trumps penthouse is also good for a laugh.

Tend to agree. Good film, but could have been a great with more appropriate casting for Reeves character. Reeves is fine in the right role, but nuanced characters and accents aren't among his strengths - and this film required both. Putting him next to Pacino didn't do him any favours by comparison either.

Agree with the other comments, that Reeves doesn't really have the range for the part he is cast in...

Compare him to Tom Cruise in the Firm,
(basically the same plot, just replace the Devil with the Mob)

and he delivers a much better performance of the  "patsy" IMHO...

Aquaman (2nd one) - just as bad as the first.  4/10

The BeeKeeper - Was OK, typical Statham fare.  6/10

Night Swim - Trailer was the best part.  2/10

Wonka - OK for what it was.  7/10

That's not fair, Aquaman 2 is waaaaaaay worse than the first one, which was not great itself but still...

Watched The Stand In starring Drew Barrymore on TV the other night.

It was pretty slow, pretty badly acted and very predictable.

It has Drew Barrymore playing a character and her standin - so two characters. I won't spoil it, but it's pretty rubbish.

3/10 from me

Good lord. It's my time for seeing BAAAAD movies right now.

Made the poor choice to watch Aquaman 2 over the weekend. I really wish I could have had that six hours back. What's that you say? It's not six hours? Are you sure? It certainly felt like six hours!

  • CGI that looked like it consumed all of the budget, but wasn't needed.
  • Acting that was poor at best.
  • Co-stars who seemed to be almost unwanted by the movie's producers.
  • A villain that lacked any villainous menace.
  • A giant seahorse that neighs underwater!
  • Plotless, pointless and poorly executed are three things that would be generous ways to describe this turd.

1/10

Watched Starship Troopers. Looks terrific in 4K / Dolby everything. Pretty good fun too, if not exactly high art 7.666 recurring.

The high art is definitely there under the surface.  It's a great satire as well as a cool sci fi action.

I wish Paul Veerhoven had stuck to Sci Fi action films we might have got a few more classics.

Right, so now I've started watching Startship Troopers again.

But yes, the militaristic view, the xenophobic comments, the two classes of residents, it's all there as a preview of a fascist society. Ah, and some spaceships too.

A bit during lunch time, will finish it tonight. Available on Disney+.

Starship Troopers is a fantastic film much misunderstood.  Screeds have been written about the satire being too subtle for some, and how the satire might have been so subtle that it was mistaken for being the very thing it was satirising.  One of my favourite arguments was to do with the "gratuitous" nudity in the shower scene.  Paul Verhoeven explained that it was a deliberate attempt to show that this fascistic society had "evolved" past the sexualisation that pervades our society, and the hangups associated with separating the genders weren't present.  (I think I read that it was also about showing that they were more interested in the militaristic elements, rather than being obsessed with sex.) But a lot of critics just saw it as an opportunity for cheap titiliation - again, mistaking the point of the scene. There's a parallel evocation of this idea in the "co-ed" football game, with both men and women playing in the same team.

The Great Escaper 7/10

Bernard Jordan escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France.

This I believe was the last movie that Glenda Jackson made just before she past on. Michael Caine, well he is Michael Caine ticking along nicely at 90. A quiet, enjoyable movie based on fact, loosely)

iMac 27" [14.2] (late 2013), Airport Time Capsule 5th gen, iPhone13 x 2, iPad6, iPad Mini5, Spark Smart Modem 1st Gen

Panasonic TV Viera TH-L50E6Z (1080p), Panasonic Blu-ray PVR DMR-BWT835, Yamaha AVR RX-V1085 [6.1 Surround Speaker System], Apple TV 4k 64Gb (2nd gen), Apple HomePod mini

Kia Sportage Urban EX (2019), Suzuki Swift SR7 (2011)

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.

Bullet Train - 4K BluRay - 5/10

Brad Pitt stars in a Japanese gangster movie that is a cross between Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritche that just doesn't work for me. The dialogue is a pale imitation of both directors work.

Even 4K BluRay can't save it.
